Storyline

Sam is still aiming to buy back the bar, but is still a lot short on capital. Robin is getting death threats and thus is surrounded by a mass of security guards. The situations in Sam and Robin's lives intersect when Robin, who was planning on sailing his boat, aptly named The Rebecca, in the Cape Cod Regatta that afternoon, is called off on emergency business. Sam would love to sail the boat in Robin's place since the winner's purse is $10,000. Without Sam needing to ask Robin, Robin does let Sam sail The Rebecca in his place. Now, all Sam needs is a crew, so he enlists the help of Carla and ex-Coast Guard employee Norm. During the race, Sam is working his butt off, but Carla and Norm concede defeat when they drop into last place early on. Abandon Sammy

Sam enters Robin's boat in a regatta only to discover it's rigged with a bomb. Wow, I can't believe I wrote that sentence. Can't even believe that sentence became an episode of Cheers. It's not awful, of course- few Cheers are- but it is unusual and very broad and not very memorable.

Carla agrees to accompany Sam on the boat because she's "used to being around sailors" (?) and Norm is convinced to join them when he is assured there will be a cooler of beer on board.

You see, because, Norm likes beer.

Brilliant writing aside the three schnooks hit the high seas and then start panicking when they find the bomb, beginning a series of high-energy physical gags that won't make anyone forget the Stooges. Whoever said every punchline was funnier when it was howled in fear needs to re-read the book of comedy. The magical boat has curtains over the windows so we never see sky, water, or any other establishing shot that would convince us these people are anywhere other than Studio 12 on the Paramount lot.

The nicest part about this episode is the late-night bull session at the bar, when the group listens to the exciting story of survival. The after-hours meeting has a nice relaxed vibe. Then Robin shows up and we finish out on a weak laugh. There's just not anything substantial in the whole show. Sail on, sailor...
