- Sam falls off the wagon and Diane has a nervous breakdown after the breakup. But after she's cured, Diane returns to Cheers to recommend her psychiatrist--Dr. Frasier Crane--to help Sam. But she doesn't say that she's involved with him.
- It's been six months since Diane walked out/Sam kicked her out of the bar, and it hasn't been a good six months for either. Sam has gone back to his carousing drunken ways, none of which he attributes to the break-up with Diane. Diane has spent the last three months as a voluntary patient at Goldenbrook Sanitarium. Upon her release, she seems happy but she is still jumpy and nervous and can't even say Sam's name. The break-up and Sam's behavior has had an affect on others in the bar. Sam has continually slept with the replacement waitresses, who have in turn quit when things went sour with Sam. This instability has taken its toll on overworked Carla. However, the one positive thing for Carla is that at least Diane is gone, and Carla has stipulated that no one is allowed to even mention Diane's name in the bar. But hardest hit is Coach, who lived through Sam's previous life as a drunk. Coach takes matters into his own hands and goes and sees a just released Diane. Coach tries to convince Diane to come and see Sam. After an initial refusal, Diane agrees if only because she has a friend - a psychiatrist she met at Goldenbrook - who she thinks can help Sam. Upon Diane's arrival back at Cheers, Sam believes Diane has only returned because she's still in love with him. What he sees on Diane's face is not quite what he thinks. With others in the bar, Cliff has just returned from a 2-week trip to Florida. No one seems to have missed him or pays much attention to his vacation tales.—Huggo
- Picking up 6 months after the last episode, Diane has made good on her word not to return to Cheers. Since then, Sam has reacted to what happened by going back to drinking, not to mention cavorting with numerous women. This has even spread to new waitresses being hired, which has caused 6-8 waitresses to quit, leaving Carla to bear the brunt of serving duties. The only saving grace out of the entire ordeal for Carla, is that Diane is gone, and there has been no mention of her name.
One person who is not appreciating how Sam is handling himself is Coach, who was witness to Sam' drunken exploits on the baseball field long ago. Hoping she may help, Coach visits Diane. Diane admits that she does not want to go back, but Coach tells her how worried he is for Sam, given how he's started drinking again.
Shortly afterwards, Diane stops by at Coach's request. As expected, the two have a small war of words, before Diane tells how she knows someone who may be able to help Sam. It is then that Carla sidelines the conversation, and reveals where Diane has been for the last 6 months: in a mental institution (albeit one that allows one to 'come and go as they please,' as Diane tells Carla). Diane does confirm that she wants a Doctor who assisted her to analyze Sam, but Sam claims he doesn't need help. However, his friends at the bar do admit that he should take her advice.
After much negativity, Sam finally agrees to see the Doctor...only to realize that the Doctor (Frasier Crane), is sitting at the bar, and has been analyzing Sam during his little 'tirade.'
Frasier allows Sam to clean up in the office, as he sees Diane to the entrance. As Coach follows Sam, Sam explains that he knows why Diane came back: it's because she's still in love with him. Coach admits he isn't so sure about this, but Sam is positive.
As Sam goes into his office, Coach notices Frasier and Diane seeming a bit 'close' by the front door, before they depart.
