Memories of old King Hamlet
bkoganbing18 February 2016
Although the parallels are obvious Sebastian Cabot did not want us to miss the fact that this story was liberally borrowed from the Bard's Hamlet. Possibly it was to make younger viewers check out the real deal and as such may have been a service.

The beloved father of our Hamlet figure is shot to death and the Checkmate team investigates. This Hamlet was an industrial tycoon and CEO of a large corporation and Scott Marlowe feels that his family is not mourning him properly. Not his mother Mary Astor nor his uncle Frank Overton. The Polonius and Ophelia characters, Ford Rainey and Olive Sturgess seem to have their own agenda.

Playing as much a part in the drama are the recordings of the father who had a Nixon like fixation of taping all that went on in his office. That is what leads us to the real truth and the Hamlet parallels end here with quite a different outcome. And of course we learn the real truth about how this King Hamlet met his end.

Scott Marlowe was brooding and intense in the lead. But watching him I thought this was a great part for James Dean. Too bad he wasn't available.
