Since 1981, all vehicles sold in the United States and Canada are required to have VIN numbers that are 17 characters in length - no more, no less. Prior to 1981, manufacturers were free to use as many characters as they saw fit. His other information on the number 1 meaning US built, and the F meaning Ford, was correct. See more
