CORONADO 9 – Long Way to Detroit - 1961

This is episode thirty one of the thirty-nine episode P.I series, CORONADO 9. The series ran during 1960 and 1961. Rod Cameron headlines as ex-Navy man who now works as a private investigator based in San Diego.

P.I. Cameron is called to London, England, to see an old buddy from his Navy days. The friend, Lester Matthews, is head of security for a diamond importing concern. It seems that a group of smugglers are flooding the market with gems from Sierra Leone. The company has sent several agents to investigate but they all ended up dead.

Matthews figures that maybe an American might have a better chance of infiltrating the smuggling gang. They are offering a tidy sum and Cameron accepts. He takes a ship to Freetown, Sierra Leone.. There he hits the bars as a sailor looking to make a few bucks. Sure enough, Cameron is soon swimming in the deep end. He is set up for a murder. He is then offered a safe escape trip back to England if he will deliver a small package. The package of course is full of diamonds.

A few twists and turns along with a red herring or two are tossed at the viewer during this one. The smugglers are led by Vito Scotti with the gang including Barb Stuart, Rayford Barnes and Charles Horvath. The mandatory amount of gun-play and fist fights ensue before the nasty types are either dead, or under lock and key.

Stuntman Charles Horvath makes a most imposing villain. He pops up all the time in small bits (232 roles) in all sorts of1950's and 60's television series.

50 plus years later there is still a big trade in "Blood Diamonds" from Sierra Leone.
