Subordinates would not take a theft report involving a superior officer such as Getraer, especially since Getraer was negligent and in violation of state law for leaving his keys in the car. The report would either be taken by local law enforcement or CHP personnel not in Getraer's chain of command. See more »

The Final Episode And Why CHiPs Got Canned?
15 August 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

In the final episode of CHiPs,we join Getraer on his way to work. He stops to get a paper and leaves the keys in the car. Two blonde women steal it and cause an accident. The next day, Carter finds Getraer's car and chases it assisted by Grossie, Bruce, Bobby, and Kathy on motors. He blocks the road, but Getraer orders him out of the way, and the thieves escape again.

Out on the streets, Ponch and Bruce spot Getraer's car. Getraer shows up and arrests them after the car runs out of gas but they didn't put it in park and the car rolls away and gets wrecked. The final scene of the episode ends in a basketball game with the CHP Explorers playing against the LAPD Explorers.

Too bad that the final episode of CHiPs was somewhat simplistic as involving finding Getraer's lost car and with Ponch being involved once again with the Brat Patrol a.k.a CHP Explorers - teenage members of the CHP.Not good to end a great run of one of the most popular shows on television.

It was obvious that CHiPs started its downfall on its 6th season when Larry Wilcox left since the show became somewhat less realistic and has become clichéd and predictable. In addition to that,it tried to run away from its identity as it featured episodes that have turned it into somewhat weird like science fiction. And worse,it tried to be creative in the wrong way like: having an orangutan becoming a member of the CHP,having teen-agers become members of the CHP; and having one episode revolved around a robot at CHP instead of capturing criminals and having road chases.

And it was obvious that both Tom Reilly and Bruce Penhall were never able to fill the big shoes that Wilcox left for them to carry on the success of the show. Too bad that Erik Estrada, despite being the biggest star of the show, could not carry it on his own despite of his popularity and charisma. It was evident that Larry Wilcox was a big part of the show's success.Too bad that things did not work out between him and Estrada off-camera.And producers did not treat Wilcox the same way they treated Estrada.

If things did not turn out the way it did to back in the day,I always would have believed that CHiPs would have lasted more than ten seasons instead of six and this would have not been the final episode.Well, that's history now and we can't go back 30 years ago and changed what happened.
