Trivia

A rookie highway patrol officer that began work in 1955 when Highway Patrol (1955) first aired would still likely be working in 1977. They would have 22 years on the job at that point and CHP officers often work for 30 years prior to retirement. See more »

Goofs

While riding westbound on the Ventura Freeway, Jon and Ponch get the alert for the robbery that had taken place on White Oak near the Ventura Freeway- although the alert erroneously said the Hollywood Freeway. After exiting the freeway and turning around, a few minutes later, Jon calls in the suspects were eastbound on the Ventura Freeway at Reseda. Reseda is only 9/10 of a mile west of White Oak, and going east would place the robbers going towards the scene of the crime, not away from it. See more »

Meeting An Actor And Hustling To Make Money
23 July 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

In the ninth episode of the first season of CHiPS entitled "Hustle",Ponch discovers that Jon has a talent for bowling as the latter worked once as an instructor. This prompted Ponch to place a series of bets against the other police officers that Jon is going to beat everyone in the upcoming tournament.

Later on patrol, they were assigned to catch motorcycle riders thieves. But on course of Jon's patrol,a car that went through the stop sign without stopping. When Jon tries to give a ticket to the driver, they were surprised to see actor Broderick Crawford.Mr.Engelbert showed up and asked him to leave. But nevertheless,he still got excited in the process that he instead gave him a pass on the violation that he had committed. Ponch got frustrated when he got back to Jon as he was able to ask for the actor's autograph.

Then,Jon and Ponch saw the motorcycle rider thieves robbing another grocery store. The LAPD saw them and went after them. But they managed to get away.Later, the Jon and Ponch saw them once more and ride through a park and they follow and finally corner the thieves and arrest them.At the conclusion,Jon's hand is hurt and it puts Ponch into a disaster after he just doubled the bets that he made a while ago.

The first season was more of a comedy that is why it was great to witness a lot of funny scenes especially with Ponch, who initially was slated to elicit lot of laughter from the audience. Many CHiPs fans would have found this awkward especially those who are more familiar with the later seasons since there was change of character by transforming him into a more confident police officer rather than a silly and bumbling one.I think that it made the show better that way considering that a bumbling Ponch would probably not suit the viewers as the show went on. Also,it was good to see too that the chases became the centerpoint of the story later on as well as compared here which became more of a side plot as we get to see more of Jon and Ponch's laughable moments as CHiP officers rather than those that should be taken seriously.
