An All-Emotions, nothing Barred Episode, 18 April 2009

I truly love the finale to Buffy as it epitomises everything the show stands for. Love, sacrifice, courage and ultimately redemption. It does not preach to the audience or try to go to far in the action stakes, placing the story of a sisterly bond above everything else.

The Storyline to the gift: Buffy is left to fight another apocalypse yet again. As Anya thinks up solutions to stopping Glory, the others wonder how they will survive what they are to face. Spike finally opens his heart to Buffy, Willow's powers increases ten fold and Anya realises what sacrifices means when it comes to someone you love. The finale results in an epic battle between Buffy and Glory, with Buffy gaining the upper hand. Once she has left Giles ends the reign of Glory by killing her other half, Ben. Too late to save Dawn she is about to leave when Dawn says something that triggers in her mind. She needs to sacrifice herself to save her sister. Ending with the death of Buffy and the grievances of her friends it is a heartbreaking final act with a quote that still grabs now.

What makes this episode work so well? This and episode, The Body, show that the TV series is not the fluffy entertainment critics have labelled it over the years. It shows that things are not always straight cut.

We have been with Buffy from the beginning, watched her fight the ultimate and save the world time and again. We know this is the episode when that will not be the saving grace.

I love the episode because it allows me to channel all feelings from anger to sadness. It is remarkable that Joss Whedon is able to take characters that are deemed soulless and in the last part show the thread of humanity they still possess. Show Anya and how far she has come on her journey. I also love how this episode sets up the arc for Season 6. The powers of Willow are getting stronger and the focus grows later her on in the show.

In a nutshell this is was a stunning piece of TV that showed more imagination, creativity and skill than any movie has done in the last while. Add to this actors who are flawless in their presentation and it is all the more heartening for it.

There are flaws yes, and questions too but to focus on them during a pivotal part of the show is taking away from the ambiance of the stunning finale.

If all TV was this good, I would be glued to the screen.

In the end though it is a story of sacrifice and peace and shows that sometimes the saddest answer is the better finale. Just quite simply gorgeous and time-consuming. Years from now this will be the stuff people talk of when they refer to the golden years of TV.

Fantastic.
