Storyline

At Buffy's 19th birthday party, Giles has a realization. He is an unemployed, middle-aged man hanging around with a bunch of teenagers. He feels even worse when he finds out that he is the only one who doesn't know about Riley and the Initiative. Feeling useless and insecure, he runs into Ethan Rayne, but the confrontation ends in drinks at the local pub rather than the usual fisticuffs. The next morning, Giles looks in the mirror and discovers he's woken up as a demon. Written by Alex

Ethan Rayne: We used to be friends, Ripper. When did all that fall apart?
Giles: The same time you started to worship chaos.
Ethan Rayne: Oh, religious intolerance. Sad, there. I mean, just look at the Irish Troubles.

A New Monster in Sunnydale
9 August 2006 | by (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – See all my reviews

Ethan Rayne invites Giles for a couple of drinks and puts a spell on him, transforming Giles in a primitive strong monster. Spike is the only one to understand the language spoken by the monster, and Buffy almost kills him.

"A New Man" is an irregular episode of Buffy, but also worthwhile. There are some continuity mistakes in the bar, the way Buffy recognizes Giles is ridiculous, but there are also some very funny moments, like Giles chasing Professor Maggie Walsh or trying to communicate. Spike again has the funniest lines. My vote is eight.
