While washing a car with his brother, young and outgoing Freddie Jr. catches the eye of Bracken, who snaps him up as a natural to play a black student in the starring role of a new TV series. Soon, Freddie's remarried mother's worst fears come true, when the boy's adored real father - a gin soaked fry cook, shows up for a birthday bash thrown by the studio for the troubled man - putting more pressure on the thirteen year old boy.
