Ben Cartwright gets to show his reputation for tolerance and fair play in this Bonanza story about a woman held captive for years by the Paiutes and only recently freed to return to her husband. The only problem is that she's carrying a papoose courtesy of the Paiute chief. The story has elements of the classic Barbara Stanwyck/Joel McCrea western Trooper Hook.
Mariette Hartley is the guest star playing the woman who really didn't have any choice about whether she would submit to the Paiute chief's advances. Still Hartley's husband John Carter is understandably not crazy about having his wife's illegitimate kid around.
A lot of people have to get over both themselves and a lot of institutional racism they harbor. Hartley does well as the woman who is a mother first though even she's got no idea how this situation will play out.
