One of the few Bonanza's that took on religion
18 April 2006 | by (Camilla, GA) – See all my reviews

Known as one of the longest "horse operas" in television history, "Bonanza" rarely tackled controversial topics. However, this installment, along with the first part, tells the story of a Mormon ("Rawhide's" Eric Fleming) that is aided by the Cartwrights as he attempts to take his two wives (Dina Merrill and Lois Nettleton) to their new home, miles away.

Thwarting their efforts is an overzealous preacher (veteran Booth Coleman in an Emmy-worthy performance as "Reverend Parley"), determined to halt this "abomination to God" in any way that he can. His relentless pursuit, aided by his holy "henchmen", speaks volumes on intolerance.

Though the story has a bittersweet ending, it is still one of the most powerful episodes of the 14-year-long western and an example of what the show was capable of, besides the goings on at the Ponderosa.
