- Arnie is a lonely man with big muscles, a little brain and an ugly face. He is friendly by nature, but when somebody jeers at him and calls him an ape, he becomes mad. Then he is very dangerous. Most people avoid Arnie, but Hoss recognizes something of his own nature in Arnie and wants to help him.—Maths Jesperson {maths.jesperson@bredband.net}
- At a saloon in Virginia City, Hoss begins fighting a giant man named Arnie after he gets into an altercation with Joe. Hoss and Arnie fight to a draw, but Arnie had earlier appeared to stick up for the barmaid, named Shari. Shari soon realizes she can manipulate Arnie into buying her expensive things such as drinks, but Hoss - knowing Shari's true character as a mean, manipulative person - manages to get Arnie to leave. After Arnie leaves, everyone in the saloon begins making cruel jokes about Arnie, who has the size and strength of an ape but the mind of a child. Arnie - who has the characteristics of a person with autism - cannot understand nor control his superhuman strength, and also has an anger management problem ... meaning when he gets angry, he becomes extremely dangerous. Joe and Adam believe Arnie is bad news, but Hoss senses something gentle and kind in Arnie and wants to mentor him, to become a productive member of society. After approaching Ben and getting him a job on the Ponderosa, Arnie - although appreciative of their friendship - seems to continually be distracted by Shari because of her glowing beauty. Repeatedly, Hoss tries to warn Arnie that it is an unrequited relationship and that Shari has no true interest in him, only to manipulate and demean. Eventually, one day at the saloon, Hoss confronts Shari and her friends and tells them to knock off their behavior, and that Arnie will be saving money to buy a farm. Eventually, Arnie loses control of his emotions and, during a trip to Lake Tahoe, knocks out Hoss. At the saloon, Arnie learns the truth about Shari and kills her by breaking her neck. A posse quickly forms to hunt down Arnie, but Hoss tries to intervene and get Arnie to voluntarily surrender himself into custody, but not long after that effort fails, Arnie is shot down and killed. A distraught Hoss tells Ben that Arnie never truly wanted to hurt anyone and takes Arnie's corpse to "the farm he always wanted."—Brian Rathjen <briguy_52732@yahoo.com>
