A little peace and quiet
bkoganbing10 December 2020
It's one of those nights when between Hoss's snoring, Adam's guitar playing and Little Joe's wooing of a maiden fair Ben Cartwright is having the mother of all insomnia attacks. Lorne Greene goes to Virginia City thinkng the hotel will offer him some peace and quiet.

Anything but, as Greene gets into a series of silly situations one on top of another. The episode plays like one of those burlesque skits that Abbott&Costello might have done.

Standing out in the cast are Jean Willes as an overbearing widow, Jay Eipley as a naive young kid from Texas, and most of all Eddie Firestone as an officious little squirt of a hotel clerk.

Poor Ben Cartwright, this wasn't his night.

Hilarious

A hilarious episode from the very first scenes to the very last.

Poor Ben is dog tired and trying to get some sleep. But the rest of the house is busy. Hoss is snoring as only Hoss can do, Adam is in a musical mood and playing his guitar and Little Joe is having noisy shennigans with a lady love, a bell and a frog on the stoop. Between the three of them, they are keeping Ben awake.

Ben decides to go into town (an hour's ride, no less) to get a hotel room for the night. He becomes involved with the other guests' many and complicated problems, from a slimy clerk to an amorous widow, romance to attempted murder, and a filthy tramp.

This is Bonanza comedy at its best.

Kinda knew it'd be stupid going into it

Once again we have writing that dumbs Ben down. Ben's not a stupid man, let's not write him like he's an idiot.

So our plot is basically the name of the episode. Ben's tired and just wants to sleep. He's at the Ponderosa and everybody's making some level of noise. Hoss is snoring up a storm, Adam's playing his guitar, Joe's 'romancing'. His idea of romance is teasing his girl with a frog. But I guess you have to keep things g-rated. It's only in today's times everybody would be running to the hotel to sleep because Joe and his girl would be shattering windows with their moaning, squeeling and various other sex noises.

Okay, Ben throws in the towel and goes off to the hotel to sleep and he has more noise and crap to deal with besides snoring, guitar playing and 'romance' noises. It's a thin storyline stretched into the time slot.

1. What's Adam still doing at the Ponderosa? He was building a house during his attempted romance with Laura? I really don't get Charles Ingalls lazy vibes off a man like Adam. Charles won't build onto his house even if the family's crammed like sardines in a can. I can realistically see a man like Adam continuing to build the house and be able to have his own space. I'll refrain from making 'having your own space for sexy times' comments although I'm clearly thinking them. ;)

2. Okay, Hoss might snore all night. Does Ben expect Adam to stay up all night playing guitar? Will Joe's sexy times' end up in the bedroom after all? Doubtful. Everybody has to go to bed or go home sometime. Wait it out and then get the sleep you desire in your own bed.

Ben does get to sleep at the end of the episode but there's no telling just how long he'll be able to sleep since he was still up for a long time due to all the chaos at the hotel. Should also mention Ben's sleeping with a drunk man in the hotel bed. What's this drunk man doing? Snoring up a storm next to Ben. So yeah...maybe next time just wait it out at the Ponderosa.

I will give one positive comment. Ben's a nice guy. He had tried to get Hoss, Adam and Joe to shut up at the house and he tells everybody to go back to what they're doing. Lot of people would've shouted for everybody to shut up and get their butts into bed.
