In this episode, Cliff Murdock (Tom Poston) gives Dr. Robert Hartley (Bob Newhart) a container of maple candy from Vermont. Both Poston and Newhart later co-starred in the sitcom Newhart (1982) which was set in Vermont.
Three women in the bar try to pick Bob up. When Bob is sitting with two of them (Rosemary and Sharon) he mentions that he is going home to watch Barnaby Jones (1973). The third woman was played by Sally Stark, whose next role was on Barnaby Jones.
Tom Posten plays Cliff Murdock, a friend of Dr. Hartley, who's wife has kicked him out. In 2001 the actor would marry Bob Newhart's costar Suzanne Pleshette.
Veronica Hamel is one of many future Hill Street Blues co-stars that appeared on the series. Before this, the man she would be in bed with for all the series' wrap-ups, Daniel J. Travanti, played one of Bob's patients. Also there was Michael Conrad and James Sikking.
