Plot Summary

  • Richard Carstone finally tires of the exhausting court case,which undermines his health as well as his finances. Ultimately, a most recent Jarndyce last will is found at Smallweed's by detective Bucket, which decides the Chancery case in Richard's favor, with a bitter aftertaste: expenses have eaten up the entire estate. John Jarndyce welcomes Rick home, but it's only to die. Guppy's renewed proposal to Esther, now he has his own legal practice, is equally politely rejected. Even DR. Allan Woodcourt's declaration of love, now he can get a lucrative position in the north, is tearfully turned down as Esther feels obliged to honor her promise to wed her guardian, but he relieves her of that.

  • Sir Leceister visits his wife's grave. Esther calls on Miss Flite who tells her she has made Esther the beneficiary in her will.She also calls on Ada who is terribly unhappy and despairs at Richard's illness and his single-mindedness in pursuing the case. Woodcort tells Esther that Jarndyce has helped him acquire a position in the North Country and proposes. She tells him she and Jarndyce are engaged. Guppy again proposes to Esther. Smallweed continues searching trough Krook's papers and finds yet another will in the name of John Jarndyce, one that solves the legal difficulties and resolves the case in Richard and Ada's favor. Lawyer's fees have used up the entire estate however and there is nothing left. John Jarndyce releases Esther from her promise.
