Prince Ludwig is German, yet his torturer is Spanish. This confusing combination may be explained by historical context. In the late 16th century, Spain and the Holy Roman Empire (which contained most of Germany) were ruled by cousins from the House of Hapsburg, and cooperated in numerous political and military conspiracies.
