Recovering alcoholic Jim Bergerac, a sergeant in the Jersey police force, returns to the island after a period of absence during which he has recovered from injuries sustained on the job. Nonetheless he is not considered fit enough to join the newly-formed Bureau Des Etrangers, headed by Inspector Crozier. Thus Jim does some unofficial sleuthing into the death of colleague Tom Draycott, and, helped by Draycott's girlfriend, artist Francine, uncovers a plot to sell arms to South Africa. His success in catching the culprit leads to his being accepted into the bureau though he still has to contend with the reluctance of his ex-wife Deborah, daughter of shady millionaire Charlie Hungerford, to see their daughter Kim. [after recovering from injuries received while making an arrest, Jim returned to work but the Chief told him that his medical report meant that he was likely to be dismissed from the police as being unfit for duty, but now he has just arrested a bent gun dealer after a fight, forcing the Chief to reconsider his decision]
I'm going to recommend to the committee that the question of your fitness be reviewed at a later date.
Reviewed, Jim, which means proved.

Recovering from and injury and alcoholism a policeman coming back to work.
Just watched this first episode of Bergerac on youtube. I was interested in watching this program because of John Nettles. I finished watching the 81 episodes of Midsomer Murders with John Nettles on netflix about a week ago. It was interesting the see the difference of Nettles from older to younger, for me. As an American I like British mysteries and humor. This episode of Bergerac starts with him coming back to Jersey via airplane. He witnesses, from the plane as it lands, a vehicle trying to stop a small plane take off but it crashes and the driver dies. It turns out to be a good friend. Bergerac is coming back to Jersey, where he was a police sergeant, after time in a hospital recovering from a broken leg caused by drug dealers and a problem with alcohol. Is wife has divorced him and he has a daughter. He was promised by the police chief that he would get his job back but now it looks like he won't. He goes on his own to discover what the crime was his friend had been following. Without saying more I found it entertaining. I will watch more episodes.
