"Karl Rossum" is undoubtedly a combination of the name of Czech author Karel Capek and "R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)," the play written by Capek which is credited with coining the word "robot" (Czech for "slave") as it is used now. In this episode, Karl Rossum invents "duplicants"; i.e., robots.
