- Bruce Wayne: And what have you got there?
- [Barbara takes a teddy bear out of her purse]
- Barbara Gordon: Oh, this is Wubby. I've had him forever. Dad won't pick me up at the airport without bringing him along.
- Commissioner James Gordon: [blushing] Well... he knows the way better than I do.
- Bruce Wayne: Alfred, what happened? Where's Ms. Duane?
- Alfred Pennyworth: Forgive me, Master Bruce. I... I can't imagine how, but I-I must have dozed off. I assume Ms. Duane has left.
- Bruce Wayne: I assume nothing at this point.
- Alfred Pennyworth: I do wish you wouldn't be so rough with your toys, Master Bruce.
- [answering a ringing phone]
- Alfred Pennyworth: Wayne Manor. Moment, please. Mr. Lucius Fox, Master Bruce. Shall I put him on the speakerphone?
- Batman: Thank you, Alfred.
- [adopting his Bruce voice]
- Batman: Lucius, what's up?
- Lucius Fox: Bad news, my friend. They got away with all the prototype protein-silicon wafer chips from R&D.
- Batman: The design specs?
- Lucius Fox: Still safe in the computer, thank heaven. The thieves won't be able to duplicate the chips without them. Maybe we should discuss tightening security in case they come back.
- Batman: You're right. Ten minutes, Lucius. Thanks.
- Randa Duane: [finding her way into the Batcave] H.A.R.D.A.C., I've definitely found something. Bruce Wayne is Batman.
- H.A.R.D.A.C.: Intriguing. This data may be useful later. There must be a central computer. It will have the data I need.
- Randa Duane: I see it. Prepare for interface in one minute.
- H.A.R.D.A.C.: Randa, you did not bring me the design specifics I needed.
- Randa Duane: There wasn't time to get them from the Wayne Enterprises databanks. I'll try again tomorrow night.
- H.A.R.D.A.C.: Some people in high places are becoming too curious about this operation. They must be dealt with. The next duplicant is ready. See to its placement tonight.
- Randa Duane: Of course.
- Barbara Gordon: Don't you like the roast, dad?
- Commissioner James Gordon: It's fine.
- Barbara Gordon: That's practically all you've said since last night. Are you mad at me?
- Commissioner James Gordon: No. You're...
- Barbara Gordon: [in frustration] I know. I'm fine.
- Alfred Pennyworth: Protein-silicon what, Master Bruce?
- Batman: It's called wetware. The cutting edge of computer research.
- Alfred Pennyworth: Sounds more like a line of swimsuits.
- Batman: I'm talking about A.I.; artificial intelligence. The missing link between computers and human thought.
- Alfred Pennyworth: You mean machines that think?
- Batman: Yes, and with a will of their own. They could process raw data a million times faster than we, yet still be able to make the leaps of intuition that inspired our greatest minds.
- Alfred Pennyworth: Sounds as if the human race could become quite expendable. Except for butlers, of course.
- Batman: [sarcastic] Of course.
- Dr. Karl Rossum: This is my greatest achievement, my prototype A.I. This is H.A.R.D.A.C.
- Bruce Wayne: Who?
- Randa Duane: Holographic Analytical Reciprocating Digital Computer. H.A.R.D.A.C
- Bruce Wayne: So, tell me, what does H.A.R.D.A.C. do?
- Dr. Karl Rossum: Now, Bruce, I can't tell you all of my secrets, can I? Let's just say that certain, uh... that certain... projects are under his control.
- Bruce Wayne: They get the wetware specs?
- Lucius Fox: I don't know yet.
- Bruce Wayne: They dust the keys for prints?
- Lucius Fox: Yeah. Nothing. They've got the file, all right. How are these guys getting in here?
- Bruce Wayne: Don't worry. I uploaded a decoy file here last night. The real design specs file is at my house.
