The character "Ma Parker" was based on the real life gangster Kate "Ma" Barker. Ma Barker and her boys were considered public enemies for their murderous crime spree in the mid-1930's and they were often lumped together with such legendary bank robbers/murderers such as John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Bonnie and Clyde.
