Great plot twists make this a good episode of Barnaby Jones
FloridaFred9 May 2021
Lots of betrayal and backstabbing in this story. A really great plot twist develops about halfway through the show.

Actor Gary Lockwood, as character "Mitch Mitchell", is very convincing. Penny Fuller, as character "Mary Dwayne", is full of surprises.

One noteworthy scene: there is quite a bit of skin on display during the jewelry demo in Mitchell's backyard.

Can Barnaby Jones find out if this was a professional job, or was someone on the inside? Watch and find out!

Cold-blooded amateurs.

Warning: Spoilers
When the story begins, a masked man forces a worker to open the door to a storage area. He then has the woman inside gagged and thrown into the safe while the place is robbed. Now here's the twist...the worker who was forced to open the place is a willing accomplice....and they pair are working together to rob their employer of a fortune in platinum. But the partnership is short-lived and the worker is shot and killed by this 'friend'.

Later, while Barnaby is investigating the case, the woman who was locked in the safe approaches the boss. She tells him that she KNOWS he was the robber...and that he is now her partner! So much for loyalty to their employer!

This is an interesting show because it has a few nice twists. While I could see that it was an inside job, it was a nice twist that the robber/killer was then blackmailed by a less than loyal worker! Overall, an interesting script and a show well worth your time.

HOW TO SUCCEED AT BUSINESS. STEAL!

This always reminded by of a COLUMBO episode, and for good reason, as the series was running against that same show on Sunday nights. They had to be extra creative, and this story hits the mark.

Gary Lockwood returns, this time playing Mitch, who is very interesting to watch. Mitch owns a jewlery store who decides it may be more profitable to rob himself. By any means, not an original story, but watching Mitch execute his daring master plan will definitely keep your attention. Lockwood actually began his career as a stuntman, no surprise he played villains who made a fast getaway.

What always amazed me about these tv criminals was the fact that most lived a Hollywood life; a beautiful home, sometimes more than one, expensive cars... and still they wanted more!

Penny Fuller, great in dramatic roles, plays Mary, and about as crafty at Mitch. These two make a fine upstanding(?) couple, the only difference is which one is the first to spark Barnaby's suspicions.

Look for Val Avery (as Andy), which would be a recurring role of sorts for him. Popular Milton Selzer plays Benson and Bob Hastings has a bit as a bartender, the same role he played on ALL IN THE FAMILY. Bob's career in tv went back to the early years, appearing on such shows as CAPTAIN VIDEO.

In the spot the location segment. The jewlery store is located at 7051 Willoughby Avenue, near Santa Monica Boulevard. Today that location is one of hundreds of coffee shops in Hollywood with a long history.

Best line department: Barnaby says to Mary; "Better you do some cell time than get murdered!" Can't argue with that line.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 16 remastered CBS dvd box set.
