Barnaby is hired by the family of a man who supposedly died in Vietnam, but later they hear a rumor that he may have deserted, along with another soldier. Barnaby tracks the man down but he runs away. While chasing him, he shoots, Barnaby shoots back and hits someone, killing him. Barnaby is relieved of his gun. He continues to search for the one he's looking for. Later he discovers that the man he killed and the one he is looking for served together in Vietnam. He wonders if the man being there was a coincidence or if there is something more going on. Written by
Did You Know?
This is the one and only episode in the two-year reign of chief censor Van Gordon Sauter where the good guy is allowed to kill a bad guy - by accident. While pursuing a thug into a parking garage, Barnaby fires a warning shot into the ceiling. The slug ricochets off a ceiling beam, caroms out the door and drops a witness (who is a spy for the villains) in his tracks. Much of the rest of the two hours finds Barnaby having to deal with his new role as a "rogue killer" private eye and having his gun confiscated, meaning he must use other methods to catch some pretty nasty criminals.
