First-rate episode as Buddy Ebsen plays the lead!
sdiner8227 April 2022
Frankly, I am sick and tired of the two IMDB critics who regularly gripe about JR and Betty "hogging" the last few seasons of BARNABY JONES while Buddy Ebsen is reduced to a supporting player in his own show. Had these two whiners bothered to read the show's coverage in IMDB, they would learn that after the first four seasons, it was Ebsen himself who liked the work done by his co-stars Mark Shera and the glorious Lee Meredith that he told ABC to change the show's format whereby he, Lee and Mark would each play the lead in one-third of the season's shows, thereby giving his younger co-stars a chance to shine while he himself (who was no spring chicken) had more time off to relax and enjoy his advancing years. What actually happened, however, was that Betty and/or JR took on the lead roles in most of the episodes while in many cases, Ebsen literally phoned in his limited scenes in many of the episodes, which also allowed the show's formidable guest stars more time to develop their characters. And while it took me (and apparently the other two Pauline Kael wannabees) longer than seemed necessary to warm up to the character of JR (which I blame entirely on the writers, not on poor Mark Shera who was stuck with delivering the often obnoxious lines of dialogue he was forced to deliver), I had a serious crush on the lovely, warm-hearted, deliciously humorous Lee Meriwether since the very first episode and, after the first 4 seasons where she was given little to do, I was overjoyed to see her promoted to a full-fledged private eye, a role she played with such class and conviction that I enjoyed her shows even more than the ones with Buddy Ebsen!

All of which brings me to express my opinion of "Design for Madness", a gripping, first-rate episode played to the hilt by Mr. Ebsen which should be a cause for celebration by his legions of fans. In this outing, JR and Betty are reduced to bit parts as Barnaby tries to figure out exactly why his favorite niece (who he hasn't seen in years and has just been released after a year's stay in a mental sanitarium) seems to be verging on insanity and subject to blackouts during one of which she's looking guilty of murdering one of her alleged relatives involved in looking after her multi-million-dollar estate. Since I always avoid mentioning spoilers, I'll say no more so the viewer can enjoy every twist and turn of its insidiously suspenseful plot. I must, however, hurl a brickbat at MeTV for the shoddy treatment iwith which it is currently presenting the entire "Barnaby Jones" series. By finally showing the Perry Mason edpisodes in their entirety earlier in the evening, MeTV has added 5 minutes to the PM hours. But in order to telecast Perry Mason from 11:30 PM-12:35 AM, MeTV has seen fit to cram Barnaby Jones into a 55-minute time slot. Subtract another 10 minutes for an avalanche of non-stop commercials and station breaks, and each BJ episode which originally ran for 52 minutes in the 1970s has been butchered to approximately 40 minutes! For shame, MeTV, for shame!

Excellent episode

Yes Buddy Ebsen wanted less screen time. He grew tired of doing so much. Having Lee and Mark divide up the episodes allowed this and I never saw the problem. I know some of JR's dialogue is cringing especially now but that's on the writers.

Lee was able to shine in many episodes and it was a natural progression for the character that didn't always happen for female characters at the time.

In this episode Barnaby is the the primary lead . The lovely Julie Sommers playing Barnaby's niece turns in a strong performance. The twist is one at the time I didn't see coming but knowing Barnaby it made perfect sense . Well done.

Finally...an excellent episode that actually stars Buddy Ebsen!
planktonrules5 August 2021
From season five through eight, Buddy Ebsen was featured less and less on his own show. I assume much of this was because of his age. But regardless why, having Jedediah and Betty helming most of the shows is very disappointing if you see the series. Neither has the personality of Ebsen but also it makes no sense to have Barnaby's secretary solving crimes...and Jedediah was too obsessed with his libido to make him likeable. Because of this, I was THRILLED when I saw "Design for Madness", as Ebsen was much more important to the episode....and actually did some reasonably strenuous work late in the episode.

The episode concerns Barnaby's niece*. She seems pretty normal when the show begins but soon she seems to have shot some guy with no provocation and she's lost her mind. Through the course of the show, Amy periodically does this...going from normal to goofy. However, as the episode progresses, Barnaby starts to wonder if maybe Amy is NOT insane but is being drugged with hallucinogens in order to get her permanently locked away in an institution. But who and why???

This is a very good episode and I thought the writing was better than usual. It did have a few plot elements that didn't seem totally thought out (such as why Amy was released soon after the shooting and Barnaby throwing out Amy's pills and testing her blood instead of just testing her pills). It also was a rather cruel episode considering what Amy goes through. But it IS interesting and is never dull. See the show...see what I mean.

*NEVER become a family member or friend of Barnaby, Jedediah or, especially, Betty. This is because whenever these folks are introduced, something BAD soon happens...like they are killed, accused of murder or actually commit a murder!

BARNABY, HIS NIECE AND TROUBLE.
tcchelsey10 May 2024
Excellent story, which after all these years, sheds some light on Barnaby's family. Best of it is the casting of popular actress Julie Sommars, playing Amy, Barnaby's favorite niece who is beset with some serious problems. She has spent time in an institution, and becomes the perfect foil to be set up for a murder.

True, this storyline has been done before, but Julie Sommars is spot on in this type of role. It's a shame she did not appear in earlier seasons. Missed opportunity. Julie is best known for co-starring on MATLOCK.

Another memorable actor, Richard Doyle guest stars, playing Alan. Alan later appeared on CHEERS, and as of 2023 was still working, starring in UNDERTOW.

Another reason this episode is entertaining because it's directed by Dennis Donnelly, a top director, and producer Quinn Martin was lucky to get him, even for a single episode. Donnelly's list of credits include classics like HAWAII FIVE O, SIMON AND SIMON and the A-TEAM.

Dedicated to us Julie Sommars fans, going back to the GOVERNOR AND JJ. To note, in Studio City, CA, not too far from CBS/Radford studios, there was a placque (on Ventura Boulevard) dedicated to Julie and that 60s sitcom. It may still be there. Remember spotting it about 25 years ago near a book store, which is long gone.

SEASON 8 EPISODE 5 remastered color CBS dvd box set. Released 2018. Barnaby and Betty are on the cover.
