Shera Settles Into the Series as BJ's Assistant
glennstenb15 August 2023
I have enjoyed the BJ series for fifty years now, mostly because Buddy Ebsen's Jones character is uniquely older, gentlemanly, patient, down home, and to some degree, eccentric. His drinking milk and puttering around in his lab added to his mystique.

I always also enjoy the window dressing provided by the ever-pleasant, empathetic, and understatedly hot Lee Meriwether, who is dependable for her admiringly appreciative looks at Jones and her eager fascination with Jones' sleuthing techniques. It is a hoot to see Merrwether being invited to look into a microscope at some astounding revelatory clue and admit she doesn't know what she is looking at. It seems like once a year she gets to be the subject of a show as a damsel in distress.

Even seeing Jones arriving somewhere in his car and climbing out of it several times in each installment never gets old. Unfortunately, Ebsen apparently became eager to wind down his time on set so in came Mark Shera, and although Shera evolved into a decent enough character, his appearance kind of marked the beginning of the show's end even though it took three years to reach the finish line.

In the first few episodes of the fifth season Shera's character JR was just a dash too obnoxious to make for a comfortable acceptance among BJ's dyed in the wool fans, but as he toned down his NYC accent and became a little more subdued and thoughtful Shera became increasingly tolerable. Of course, as the show moved into the final two seasons, JR took over most of the field sleuthing duties and we distressingly saw less and less of Barnaby himself.

But in this second episode of the season we are still fortunate to still have it nearly all Barnaby!

DYING TO GET ALL THE MONEY!
tcchelsey26 January 2024
Good combination of director Walter Grauman and writer Robert W. Lenski in a real tale of greed.

The story does revive the copper angle, but is still fairly exciting, also thanks to young JR (Mark Shera). JR's addition, in a way, comes off as Barnaby's step son, who every once in a while would need a fatherly tug on the arm to slow down.

John Rubenstein, an excellent actor, plays a reporter who is investigating a suspicious land deal, and the sale of copper. At the time, price controls on copper were lifted and there was an extraordinary boom. Susan Sullivan guest stars as Ruth. In later years, Susan was associated with FALCON CREST and CASTLE.

An interesting footnote; Sullivan was originally a Playboy bunny and in her early 20s dated Cary Grant.

The great thing about this episode and future stories was the different "detective styles" of Barnaby and JR, yet uniting to solve a mysterious case. And I agree with the last reviewer, its still fun to see Barnaby working in his lab and drinking milk, although he does occasionally have a shot of whiskey in later episodes, no doubt recommended by fans.

SEASON 5 EPISODE 2 remastered color CBS dvd box set.

What is the connection?
planktonrules24 July 2021
Like the previous episode, this one features some annoying characters....in this case the reporter and Jedidiah (Mark Shera). So far, Jedidiah has not grown on me...he's brash and a bit dumb and so far NOT a welcome addition to the show. It's not a terrible episode....but is one you certainly could skip.

The show begins with a guy meeting covertly with a reporter. Immediately after they're done, the man who came to see the reporter is tossed off a cliff to his death. Later, more folks assume room temperature...and you wonder WHO is ordering this and WHY. Unfortunately, Jedidiah and the annoying reporter are not among the causalities in this one.

The story is interesting....and as I talked about above, the two characters really don't help it any. Without them, it would have been more enjoyable.
