Well written, well directed, well acted. But it's still the evening soap opera in space, with no real connection to the genre of science fiction.
A recurring theme in my reviews is that science fiction fans are predominately male, in a highly coveted demographic of 18-54 year olds. For these viewers, the most satisfying episodes in a sci-fi/action series are the ones where there are epic space battles, fought against aliens with evil intent. The least satisfying episodes are those in which the "action" takes place inside the characters' minds and personalities.
If there is a multi-episode arc that's needed to tell the story of the struggle between good and evil in outer space, culminating in the ultimate confrontation between the good guys and the bad guys, OK. We'll tune in next week to see how things progress.
If, instead, you have an episode that plays out like an installment of Falcon Crest or Knot's Landing, we'll yawn and see if there's a ball game on somewhere.
