De Cock and his team investigate the murder on a generous woman who offered help to people in need of it. There is a key witness, but he has Down Syndrome, which De Cock knows will render his testimony useless in court.
In Amsterdam's plebeian Jordaan quarter, wealthy 'do-gooder' Martha Degener is found strangled by Andi, a Down syndrome boy and regular among her many needy visitors. Despite the heatwave and broken-down precinct air-conditioning, the team considers motives and opportunity for her neglected son Jerry, a presumably abused woman's husband Otto Springer and habitual thief Theo de Vries, who may be the man Andi claims to have seen run from the murder scene. The very heat upsets the whole investigation. Written by
