The 1966 episode "A Touch of Brimstone" was banned in the US because of Diana Rigg's Queen of Sin outfit (corset, spiked dog collar and boots), which Rigg designed herself. In addition original UK ITV transmissions heavily edited the final whipping scene between Mrs Peel and Cartney to one lash of the whip. All later video and DVD releases featured the full uncut print.
This episode inspired Chris Claremont's Black Queen storyline (c. 1979) from X-Men comics. Both are set in the Hellfire Club, an organisation based on an 18th-century legend. The Black Queen's handler, a hypnotist named Jason Wyngarde, is named for both actor Peter Wyngarde who played John Cartney, and for Jason King, Wyngarde's most famous screen character. The Black Queen's costume is based on that worn here by the Queen of Sin.
This episode may be a nod to movie 'The hellfire club' (1961, Robert S.Baker) on different levels. One of the scriptwriters of the movie is Monty Berman, producer of TV series "Department S" and "Jason King", both starring...Peter Wyngarde, who plays in this Avengers' episode...
