A boy once went a wand-ering and things got tricky.
10 October 2013 | by (Edinburgh.) – See all my reviews

I like magic as much as I enjoy entertaining tales that involve the supernatural, so this episode is one that I like, despite how ridiculous it is.

Noah Plener plays Todd Marker, a young man who becomes an assistant to a magician named Shandu (James Bradford). Shandu is a bit of a grouch, but he gradually warms to Todd as the young lad continues to work hard at his craft. Unfortunately, Todd soon gets himself into a load of hot water when he takes Shandu's wand without permission. Before you can say "Fantasia" it's all getting a bit too much for Todd.

Directed by Ron Oliver and written by Cassandra Schafhausen, this is a campfire tale that is as entertaining as it is far-fetched. It tries to be unpredictable, and partially succeeds, and has fun with the moments of magic.

Plener and Bradford both do well enough in their roles, nicely transitioning from initial feelings of apprehension and coldness to mutual respect and almost-friendship.

Fans of this episode would do well to also seek out the "Bad Hare Day" episode of Goosebumps, which works equally well.
