A pair of Super Specs not being so super? It figures.
13 March 2013 | by (Edinburgh.) – See all my reviews

Time to sit around the campfire once more with this very entertaining tale that revolves around a pair of novelty Super Specs. You know what Super Specs are, don't you? Those things that you buy in joke/magic shops, the ones that allow you to see . . . . . . . . . . . . everything as you would without them? Know the ones? Yeah, hmmmm, me neither. Never mind, it's not all that important.

What IS important is that Weeds (Eugene Byrd) gets a pair of Super Specs for his girlfriend Marybeth (Graidhne Lelieveld-Amiro) as part of an April Fool's Day prank and then Marybeth starts seeing things that aren't seen by everyone else. She tries to find out what's going on from the store owner who sold the Super Specs, Sardo (Richard Dumont), but Sardo may not know as much as he pretends to.

The Super Specs may not really seem all that super, but they become much more interesting as soon as the supernatural plot element is revealed and starts to develop. Fans of the show will also enjoy this episode because it features the first appearance of Sardo, a recurring character who would pop up in over half a dozen episodes throughout numerous seasons.

Directed by Ron Oliver and written by Chloe Brown, this is one of the best episodes from season one of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? and that's mainly due to the second half, when things get a bit spookier, and the very enjoyable ending. The acting is okay, as usual, and the show continues to allot just enough time to the framing material focusing on the members of The Midnight Society.
