- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: [Lofty races his horse as though the Devil is at his heels, all the way back into town, throws himself off his horse to dismount, and runs into Annie's kitchen] I remembered, Annie. I was way out in Bear Canyon and, all of a sudden, I remembered.
- Annie Oakley: Remembered what?
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: That today was the day you promised to bake those chocolate walnut cookies for me.
- Annie Oakley: [She loosens his hand that has scooped up at least five of the gourmet delights] Not for you, Lofty, they're for Tagg.
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: Annie! No, Annie, I think you're spoiling that kid brother of yours.
- Annie Oakley: And I'm not spoiling you, is that it?
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: You couldn't spoil me. Well, I strive for attention, affection and, ah, your delicious cookies.
- Annie Oakley: All right, you may have two.
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: Only two?
- Annie Oakley: You don't want to spoil that waistline of yours.
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: [He breathes in, raises his shoulders, his chest puffs out and he shows off a slim waistline] Why, Annie, I'm positively skinny. Like a mosquito.
- Annie Oakley: It looks more like a honeybee to me.
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: Honeybee? Your honeybee?
- Tagg Oakley: It was so hot, we figured, it'd be cooler down by the stream.
- Annie Oakley: Oh, I see. And I suppose a big black bear came along and pushed you both in while you were sitting there. Is that it?
- Tagg Oakley: [the boys have been cooling off in the stream] Hey, look, that's your Mom with my sister.
- Dave Malloy: Yeah, I guessed she hitched a ride back from town.
- Tagg Oakley: Oh, I thought she was looking for you or something.
- Dave Malloy: You mean, we're in more trouble.
- Tagg Oakley: You never know about women. They're always worrying.
- Dave Malloy: As long as they're doing the worrying, we don't have to.
- Mr. Prince: And don't worry about the widow getting sympathy when you contest her legal rights. I'll have her boy in so much trouble by then she won't want to fight.
- Tagg Oakley: Stop it, sir! You can't do that! It isn't fair!
- Mr. Prince: What was that? Tagg?
- Tagg Oakley: I was with Davy at lunchtime. If he's to be whipped, then I am too.
- Mr. Prince: I fail to follow your logic. This boy's been the ring leader of trouble in this school for a long time. If you were tardy, it was only because of his bad influence. Now sit down and mind your own business. I've had about enough of you, David Malloy. I assure you I will do everything I can to have you removed from this school and placed in a Reformatory.
- [And the endless, unjustifiable whipping of the boy continues]
- Annie Oakley: Think you're safe there, Mr Prince?
- Mr. Prince: Let's see you come and get me out.
- Annie Oakley: I'll angle this next one so it just parts your hair. Now I'm sure I can place this one right in the middle of your forehead.
- Tagg Oakley: Are you still there?
- Dave Malloy: [He's down in the depths of the well] Where'd you think I'd be, you dope. Pull me up. I gotta get to Annie and Lofty.
- Annie Oakley: Well, there's one comfort anyhow. At least, you're not a teacher by profession. I'd sure hate to think of our younger generation being in the hands of people like you.
- Annie Oakley: Public sympathy's bound to be on your side.
- Widow Malloy: I'm not so sure. That Eastern schoolteacher's got everybody moonstruck.
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: I'm asking you to be reasonable, Ma'am.
- Widow Malloy: No woman is reasonable when she's losing her son. Now go.
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: Can't make war against widows and kids. If if means handing in my badge, I'll hand it in.
- Annie Oakley: You won't have to, Lofty. We'll just tell the Board of Education that we couldn't find Davy.
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: I was feeling awfully empty. And your cookies are so good, so delicious, so nourishing.
- Annie Oakley: And you're so large for just a small boy.
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: I didn't think you'd mind if I had one.
- [One in his mouth and at least five in his big hand]
- Annie Oakley: One?
- Deputy Sheriff Lofty Craig: Oh, um. Guess they kinda stuck to my fingers.
