A fairly average episode

Warning: Spoilers
This isn't my favorite episode. I love the beginning, with Wesley being interviewed by the police about some tragedy that's occurred. It's really cool and gears you up for something scary to happen as the story unfolds in flashback. Unfortunately, "The Shroud of Rohman" never really lives up to it's early promise. It has some fun parts, and it'll be referenced again in season four. But really, if you're in a hurry to get through the season, you could probably skip this episode and not miss much story wise.

"The Shroud of Rohman" revolves around a museum heist. Gunn's cousin has gotten involved in a scheme to steal a valuable artifact. A gang on demons is behind the plan and Gunn's cousin is the driver. He's scared, though, and he calls Gunn for help getting out of the robbery. One of the gang is a Vegas vampire named Jay-Don. Angel kills him and takes his place, going undercover as the other vamp. Gunn, much to Angels' annoyance, insists on joining the team, too. He pretends to be his cousin and walks into the demon meeting. Soon their in over their heads, though, as the gang decided to rob the museum immediately.

Meanwhile, Wes and Cordy discover that the gang is actually trying to steal the Shroud of Rohman. It's valuable, alright. But it's also cursed. It turns anyone near it into violent, loopy nuts. They head to the museum to warn Angel. Kate is acting on a tip that Angel is involved in something shady and ends up at the museum, too. By that time the gang is falling apart under the influence of the shroud. Angel bites Kate, pretending to kill her so the rest of the gang won't hurt her. The demons fight amongst themselves and they all want the shroud. (It's got a whole "Treasure of Sierra Madre" feel to it in the end.) Finally, Angel manages to destroy the shroud. But tasting human blood has made him even darker and moodier than he was before.

There are some good parts to this episode. I love Angel's Rat Pack disguise. Jay-Don was an talkative, flashy guy... And Angel's not. He has to try and impersonate Jay-Don and it's hilarious. Cordy and Wes look at each other skeptically as Angel assures them he can be an extrovert. He's actually really funny wearing Jay-Don's sunglasses and constantly talking in this loud voice. And his horrible suit actually matches the "vampire green" color of his eyes as he begins to loose control, which is a nice touch. Plus, a few times, I think he's channeling a combination of Angelus and Spike when he deals with the others. There's this insulting, sarcastic edge to his voice that's just fun. And like I said, I love the beginning of the episode, with Wes in the police station. "The Shroud of Rahmon" is one of the only episodes in the Buffyverse told in this kind of present day, "internal" flashback. (In fact, the only other one I can think of at all if season four's "Spin the Bottle" and I'm not sure it counts, since we don't know when Lorne is telling the story. It could be years in the future. It doesn't really have the flashbacks meeting up with the "present" like "The Shroud of Rohman" does.) Anyway, the beginning of the episode had a cool, creepy vibe to it as Wes tries to explain what happened. You see a quick shot of Angel biting someone, hear that there's a headless body, Wes asks what happened to Cordy and insists that Angel never should have been there... Wesley's really upset. Then, he looks at the officers and says in this scared sort of voice, "Wait, you didn't bring it here did you?" It's great. The end of the episode is also neat. As Cordy and Wes realize that, in trying to help Angel, they've just made things worse. I feel bad for them. They can see disaster looming, but they can't save Angel from himself.

On the down side, I'm not real clear on what Angel's plan was in this episode. Why was he actually helping those guys steal the shroud? Why didn't he just stop them from taking it in the first place? Also, if he was under the shroud's magical spell, how did he have the presence of mind to tell Kate to play dead so the others wouldn't hurt her? And if the shroud effected everyone so much, shouldn't the museum have noticed? Finally, Cordy's hair is a nightmare in this episode.

My favorite part of the episode: Cordy, under the spell of the shroud, stealing that necklace from the museum... And then deciding to keep it.

Angel and the Heist
Samuel-Shovel23 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
When Gunn's cousin gets himself mixed up in a robbery plot to steal an ancient mystical artifact, Angel must infiltrate the gang to get to the bottom of the plan and stop it from being sold on the black market. Meanwhile, Kate is hot the gang's trail.

This episode was pretty lackluster. Something about the dialogue in this one just felt a bit off and wasn't as snappy and fun as it usually is. The plot itself doesn't make 100% sense: Why did Angel decide to impersonate this vampire Jay-Don instead of just having Gunn & himself wipe out this entire crew? Even for the big guy Vyasa, all it took was a bullet in the head to kill him. (Sidenote: Always nice to see Tony Todd in things! He's a great actor) It seems like the two of them could have handled the two demons and the security guard and then went and destroyed the shroud themselves instead of following this heist all the way to the end. Maybe Angel wanted to see who the eventual buyer would have been but we never make it to that point.

Besides the casting of Tony Todd, there were a few other bright spots. The double twist on what actually happened to Kate was something I didn't see coming and thought was a nice touch. She seemed very contemplative at the end and it's possible that the two might soon reconcile their differences and team up more often.

The story-telling technique at the beginning before the flashback could have been a nice touch if the rest of the episode delivered on a great opening. It really set a tone of darkness and despair. We hear of a headless corpse, an injured officer, and we see Angel drinking from a human. "What does all this mean?" It really had me invested in the episode but unfortunately that is where things start to go downhill.

Conclusion: While it may not be as bad as "First Impressions", it's definitely one of the more forgettable episodes of Season 2.

Site map, membership, museum shop, don't they have a section like, things you might want to steal?

Warning: Spoilers
Site map, membership, museum shop, don't they have a section like, things you might want to steal? - A pretty well done episode about a shroud that makes the people around it go nuts. I think that the whole Angel/Kate thing worked very well, how the audience was made to believe that he'd gone nuts and killed her while instead he just saved her life. Also loved 'Cordy's new hair, it was supposed to be icky but of all the haircuts 'Cordy' had this season it has to be my favorite. What I do think that really damaged the episode was the whole Angel/Gunn thing, those two characters simply don't work together and just bring out the worst in each other, I'm pleased that they barely had episodes together throughout the show. I really liked the way the shroud made the characters act, 'Wesley' got high and 'Cordy' turned into a thief, I love it when she tells 'Wes' that she returned everything she stole while still wearing that huge ugly necklace. Oh and do I even need to comment on 'Angel's character? it's always fun to see him being all colorful and evil-like, David Boreanaz did a great job in this one. I think that this episode did work well, it's just that some scenes really dragged it down. UGLY: This is Jay-don. He talks too much. ANGEL: I'm a people person. I like the shirt. Where'd you get that, at Ed's big and spiny? SPINY: He's funny. You're funny. You'll be even funnier when I crush your head. ANGEL: Funny 'ha, ha' or funny peculiar? (7.5 out of 10)

Run of the mill episode
limetalhead12 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing over the top but still an interesting episode. Angel posing as the Rat Pack-esquire vampire Jay-don was pretty interesting. Hearing him talk like a native of Brooklyn and dressing almost as flashy as Lorne was actually quite funny. No shocker that Gunn posed as his cousin in order to possibly keep an eye on Angel and stick it to him for telling him not to go along. My favorite part is when Angel bit Kate in order to protect her. All I have to say is David Boreanaz is one lucky SOB. If I ever had the opportunity to suck the neck of someone as hot as Elisabeth Rohm like that, I wouldn't want to let go. What is shocking is that Angel biting Kate and telling her to play dead in some way leads to her beginning to trust him again throughout the rest of her episodes. Even though there much more happened in this episode, I only felt like writing about the parts I liked.

Cordelia: Au contraire. His day is packed: Brood about Darla, brood about Darla, lunch, followed by a little Darla brooding.

Warning: Spoilers
The Shroud of Rahmon is about a museum heist, in which Angel and Gunn participate.

Quite a good idea, having the cops interrogate Wesley and Kate caught in the crossfire. Something she holds him responsible for, people dying in the crossfire. Angel bites Kate in order to protect her from becoming one of those statistics. I just don't like this Gunn and Angel squabbling stuff. I know the shroud's messing with their heads, but Gunn talking big and hitting Angel, just doesn't work. He's no threat to Angel at all.

Worst Angel ep ever!
Joxerlives31 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
THE SHROUD OF RAHMON

The Good; Very little, like Angel's Ja'Don impression and some nice Kate stuff but that's about all.

The Bad; Cordy's hair is awful, she looks like Courtney Cox after a bad perm. The rest of the episode is pretty awful, the whole Wes interrogated by the cops technique really not working at all. If the Shroud is so powerful and destructive how could it have survived for so long?

Best line: Angel " I could use a sweater, something dark"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? The twisting of the guard's neck. The story of the city's population going insane with mother's killing their children is also horrible.

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; 17

In disguise; As Jay-Don so 7

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 1;Buffy Wes; 2; Virginia and the bleached blonde

Kinky dinky: Kate finally get's what she always wanted deep down, Angel bites her under the influence of the shroud and she appears to orgasm against her will as a result just as Buffy did in Prophecy Girl/Graduation Day pt2. Afterwards she seems almost his willing slave, bent to his will, finally able to forgive him for what's happened to her father and letting Wesley go. Apparently the things bringing in the chicks are 'the dough and the ride'. Wes says he's 'Good with the ladies himself'

Captain Subtext; Angel mistakes Kate for Darla. Hmmmm? Kate also has a pic of her dad on her desk. Where's her mum? Gunn refers to vamps killing his sister.

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 5,

Buffy characters on Angel; 13 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, Master

Questions and observations; Angel is a Chow Yun Fat fan, again weird when he was supposed to be a street tramp when he was at the height of his fame (Hard Boiled). If Wes wasn't under arrest before, why was he at the police station? We have the first appearance the tranquliser guns. Noted character actor Tony Todd (Candyman, Babylon 5, Night of the Living Dead etc) appears here almost unrecognisable as one of the demons. Is the head of the robbery gang human or demon? Jay-Don ran with the Rat-Pack as apparently Angel did during his Manilow phase according to 'The House Always Wins'. Kate is the first human Angel has fed on since Buffy in Graduation Day pt2.

Marks out of 10; 3/10, in my honest opinion the worst episode of Angel EVER!
