Enter Dennis

Warning: Spoilers
Phantom Dennis is one of my favorite "Angel" characters and "Rm w/a Vu" is his first episode. He'll share Cordy's apartment until season four. So, if you're watching the show, it's important to see this episode if only to understand his origins. But, "Rm w/a Vu" is also just a fun episode, with a lot of character development and great scenes. I really recommend that you see it.

"Rm w/a Vu" revolves around Cordelia's search for a new apartment. Unable to stand the brown water and roaches at her place, she shows up at Angels's house with all her luggage and moves in with him. Angel is at a loss as to how he should deal with her. Cordy's taking over his home, putting up her slightly burnt high school diploma and her Queen of the Winter Ball trophies. He turns to Doyle for help. Doyle has problems of his own. Some demon loan sharks are after him. He and Angel make a deal: Angel will handle the loan sharks and Doyle will find Cordy a new place to live. Soon, Cordelia is happily moving in to a beautiful new apartment. There's only one small problem. It's haunted.

Cordy refuses to surrender her new home. Even when the ghost makes it pretty clear that it doesn't want a new room mate. When Angel and Doyle come to visit her, they quickly realize that a poltergeist is haunting the apartment. Angel drags Cordy out, while Doyle promises that they'll think of a way to get rid of the ghost. After some investigating, they discover that the ghost is a Mrs. Pearson. She died in the apartment, supposedly of a heart attack, but Angel suspects that her son killed her. The son disappeared the night she died, never to be seen again. Angel and Doyle gather the supplies they'll need to exorcises her.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Pearson tricks Cordy into coming back to the apartment. When Cordy gets there, she begins attacking Cordelia. Playing on Cordy's weaknesses and hidden insecurities, and trying to strangle her. Angel and Doyle arrive and save Cody. They try to preform the exorcism, but Cordy is too upset. All she can do is cry. Realizing that they can't beat the ghost, Angel finally grabs Cordy and pulls her towards the door. Just then, the demon loan sharks after Doyle arrive and start shooting. Angel and Doyle fight them, while Cordy finally stands up to Mrs. Pearson. She beats the ghost and then becomes possessed by some force. Cordelia knocks a hole in a wall and reveals the body of Mrs. Parson's son, Dennis. It seems that Mrs. Pearson walled him up, alive, but then she suffered a heart attack and died on the living room floor. Dennis is understandably upset with his mother and destroys her. Then he moves in with Cordy as her nicer ghost room mate.

There are some great parts to this episode. Cordelia's apartment hunting is pretty funny. Every place she looks at is worst that the last. (The chanting cult with the communal bathroom is especially terrible.) No wonder she's so willing to share her space with a poltergeist. Speaking of which, I just love Cordy trying to hide the fact that her apartment is haunted from Angel and Doyle. Sisscors are flying and the word "die" appears on the wall, and still she tries to brazen it out. Angel finally has to carry her out of the house, declaring, "Cordelia, it's haunted." To which she responds, "It's rent controlled!" You just have to laugh. And I like that Doyle's loan sharks show up at Cordelia's apartment during the exorcism. So suddenly, there's a furious ghost, gangster demons, and the gang from Angel Inc., all fighting each other. Also, I like that Cordy finally finds her own strength and stands up to Mrs. Pearson. "I'm not some whiny little cry-Buffy. I'm the meanest girl in the history of Sunnydale High." THAT'S the Cordy I know and love. Finally, I'm glad that Dennis is Cordy's roommate. It's really cute that he's bringing her sodas and watching TV. I just adore Dennis.

On the down side, I wish Phantom Dennis and Spike had met up in season five of "Angel." (When Spike is a ghost, too.) Granted that's not "Rm w/a Vu"'s fault, but still every time I see this episode, I think of how cool it would've been.

My favorite part of the episode: Cordy moving in with Angel. From peeling up Angel's linoleum, to getting peanut butter all over his sheets, to leaving wet towels on his leather chairs, she's basically the house guest from h*ll. But, Angel still can't just tell her to get out. His long suffering sighs and desperate attempts to get rid of her are so cute. He's an immortal, crime fighting, vampire champion... and Cordy has him wrapped around her little finger.

How come Patrick Swayze is never dead when you need him?

Warning: Spoilers
How come Patrick Swayze is never dead when you need him? - The first 'Cordy'-centric episode so there is no way it could have gone wrong. Once again Elisabeth Rohm makes a small appearance, that woman is so gorgeous, i'm glad she plays a bigger role the next episode. The only storyline that doesn't really work for me is shockingly the 'Doyle' one, I love his character and his witty comments but I don't think the writers made much effort on giving him an interesting background, which is a shame. I loved 'Cordy', the way she rushed over to 'Angel's apartment and moved in without asking, poor 'Angel' got peanut butter spilled all over the bed and a wet towel over his leather chair, so he asks 'Doyle' to find her an apartment. After a couple of disastrous ones, he finds her a great one which she loves, only problem is that it's haunted by an old lady ghost. My favorite scene of the episode was of course when 'Cordy' strikes back after being called a bitca. This episode also introduced everyone's favorite phantom 'Dennis' who was buried alive in the wall by his own mum - You always hurt the ones you love right?. CORDELIA: I'm a b!tch? MAUDE: Take off the bed sheets, make a noose. Go on. It'll all be over soon. CORDELIA: I'm not a sniveling whiny little Cry-Buffy. I'm the nastiest girl in Sunnydale history. I take crap from no one. MAUDE: You are going to make yourself a noose and put it around... CORDELIA: Back off! Polygrip. You think you're bad? Being all mean and haunty? Picking on poor pathetic Cordy? Well, get ready to haul your wrinkly translucent ass out of this place, because lady, the b!tch is back. (9.0 out of 10)

"Rm w/a Vu" is a solid episode, thanks in large part to the good work of Charisma Carpenter. Throughout the episode Cordelia is forced to deal with a series of supernatural disturbances in her new apartment, leading to a chaotic and often terrifying series of events.

Carpenter delivers one of her strongest performances in the episode, conveying the fear and vulnerability that Cordelia feels as she battles against the malevolent spirits haunting her apartment. Her interactions with Angel are also a highlight of the episode, showcasing the chemistry between the two actors.

The episode is also notable for its creative use of set design and special effects. The spooky and unsettling atmosphere of Cordelia's apartment is well captured on screen.

Rm w/a vu

The Good;

Everything, an emotional roller-coaster for Doyle and Cordy and the introduction of Phantom Dennis. Great performance from Beth Grant, a great actress you can also see in Speed, Six Foot Under, Donnie Darko etc

The Bad;

Bit of a reach that the ghost can do a perfect imitation of Angel's voice, is she the Terminator or something?

Best line:

Cordy (of Angel) "Do you have mousse? Of course you do!"

Jeez, how did they get away with that?

Doyle's hand getting jammed in the drawer, Cordy almost getting hanged, Maude Peirson walling her son up.

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés

Damsel in distress; nope, 2.

Inverting the Hollywood cliché;

In disguise; 1.

DB get's his shirt off; wet, dripping and nearly naked 2

Cordy's tattoo; our first glimpse

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy almost hung, don't think thats counts Cordy: 5 Angel: 4 Wes: 1

Fang gang knocked out: yep, Cordy Cordy: 8 Angel: 7 Wes: 1 Doyle; 1

Kills: Cordy: none this ep. 3 vamps, ? a demon from her time in Sunnydale Angel: 1 demon for Angel. So that gives Angel 8 vamps, 3 demons, 2 humans.

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 1 Angel: 1

Alternate Fang Gang: possessed Cordy Cordy: 2 Angel: 3

Characters killed: Dennis and a trio of the flat residents offscreen

14

Total number of Angel Investigations: 3, Angel, Doyle and Cordy

Angel Investigations shot: loads of gunplay but no Angel: 5,

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 1? Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky:

Maude calls Cordy a tramp and streetwalker, good thing they didn't go through with the storyline of Corrupt huh?

Captain Subtext;

Know the face, different character; 1

Parking garages;

2

Guantanamo bay;

Once again Angel doesn't hesitate to beat his way to the answers

Questions and observations;

Excellent ep with loads of good scenes and some real emotional impact, easily one of the best of season 1. I for one find it heartbreaking that Cordy has only five names in her LA phonebook and 3 are crossed out. Aura, her Sunnydale friend is the girl who finds the corpse in her locker in Welcome to the Hellmouth on Buffy.

Marks out of 10; 8/10

Weakest episode so far
nicofreezer24 May 2022
This episode was clearly not good, After 4 very good ones. Its cheesy and the story is not so interesting, except for the comedy stuff and some scenes in the end, there is no much to remember here.

The fact that this one got a higher ranking than " Lonely Heart" ( a near masterpiece) is to me a mystery i will never solve.

Anyway one Bad episode doesn't hurt the show so much , and it wasnt terrible either , 6.8/10.

Doyle: It's all about money! What about friendship and family and all those things that are priceless like they say in that credit card commercial?

Warning: Spoilers
Rm w/a Vu is about Cordy moving in with Angel because of her horrible apartment and Angel desperately wanting her out. Leading to Cordy's new place being haunted.

Not a great episode, on the cheesy side. Overboard on the housing options and Cordy's whimpering and sudden shift to silly catty talk, the most cheesy. I like Cordy's arrival at Angel's place and her imposing herself and I like her choice to live with phantom Dennis at the end. Angel and Kate have a friendship/working relationship, but obviously Kate wants more.
