Wesley has to impersonate Angel... Ya gotta love it
katierose29523 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. I even like the title. I just adore Wesley and "Guise Will be Guise" is really his episode. It's got Wes pretending to be Angel, which is reason enough to like it in my book. Plus, "Guise Will be Guise" is just funny, with a lot of great scenes and hilarious lines. This episode also introduces Virginia, Wes's new girlfriend, who will be a recurring character for part of the season. All in all, I recommend that you see "Guise Will be Guise" if you're watching the show on DVD.

The episode revolves around Wesley impersonating Angel. Angel, out of sorts because of Darla and looking answers, goes to Lorne for advice. Lorne sends him to a swami for some spiritual guidance. While he's out of town, though, some hoods show up at the Hyperion. They want to take Angel to their boss. Cordy tries to explain that Angel's out of town, but they don't want to hear that. They pull a gun on her. Wes steps in, quickly claiming that he's Angel. He leaves with the men, much to Cordy's dismay. It turns out that the men work for a guy in the magic business. He wants "Angel" to look out for his daughter, Virginia. She's being threatened by a rival gang. Wes agrees to take on the job. He and Virginia begin to really bond. After he beats up some guys who tried to abduct her, Virginia is incredibly impressed with him. She and Wes sleep together.

Meanwhile, Cordy wants to "rescue" Wes. She sends Gunn to get Angel. Angel's been telling the swami about his life and problems. The guy has some pretty insightful comments about Angel, but there's one slight problem... He's a fake. This guy killed the real swami and took his place. He's suppose to be keeping Angel busy so he can't help Virginia. So, when the guys after Virginia realize that there are two Angel in the mix, they're pretty confused. When Gunn arrives, the swami tries to knock him out. Angel steps in and saves him, then they head back to the Hyperion.

By that time, Wes has been exposed as a fraud. Virginia is furious at him. That night is her father's 50 birthday and, as Wes and Angel compare notes, the realize that something strange is going on. The father didn't hire "Angel" to protect Virginia because, he loves her. He hired him to protect Virginia, because he wants to sacrifice her to a demon. If he feeds Virginia to the goddess Yeska, he'll get a lot of power. Wes, Cordy, Gunn and Angel have to save Virginia. She and Wes start dating for real.

There are some great parts to this episode. I just love watching Wes impersonating Angel. He's trying to pretend that he's a vampire, but he keeps running into trouble with the rules. From cringing as he drinks a glassful of blood, to insisting that they cover up all the mirrors, to accidentally touching a cross... He's just really funny. And the scene at Karitos is hilarious. Gunn is so horrified. Not by the demons, but by the idea that Angel might sing. (He'd probably be even MORE horrified if he had to listen to "Mandy.") Also, I really like Virginia facing off with her father. The first time I saw this episode, I completely wasn't expecting her dad to be the bad guy. So, I like that she stymied his evil plan, but not being a virgin. It's just a cool twist.

"Guise Will Be Guise" is all about people hiding their true selves. Virginia, her father, Wes, the swami, Ramon the bartender, and even Angel. They're all "disguising" themselves in some way. I think that this episode is especially saying that --in a way-- nobody's really Angel... Not even Angel. Cordy pretends to be Angel, spinning around in his chair. Wes tries to be Angel, impersonating him for most of the episode. And Angel himself admits to adopting a certain persona as he goes through life. That swami guy was actually making some really astute points about Angel. He does worry about his image and how people see him. He does ride around in a convertible in LA, which is a real crazy thing for a vampire to do. He does wear black all the time, because he likes being mysterious and cool. Angel is a really complex guy. Wes, meanwhile, has it in him to be heroic, but he doesn't know it yet because he's so used to being a screw up. It's only after he impersonates Angel, (literally donning Angel's "costume," his coat) that Wes realizes he can stand on his own. The idea of Angel as a champion and hero is bigger than all of them. (Which the Angel Inc. team will learn first hand when they set up shop on their own in a few episodes.) The episode is all about identity and it just really works.

On the down side, I don't understand why Cordy stopped looking at mug shots on the computer and suddenly flipped to celebrity photos in that magazine. Did she remember seeing that bodyguard's picture in there? Or was she just bored or what? I don't get it.

My favorite part of the episode: Angel's repeated insistence that --curse or no curse-- he's not a eunuch.

Fun Episode
Quixii30 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
What a fun episode! Probably the most comedic episode of Angel so far. I laughed out loud several times. There were just so many great lines or entire scenes.

I think the best part was that this episode managed to balance real character development and comedy, for a total of a really enjoyable episode.

This is a very Wes centred episode, which I think is great. He's come so far since we first met him on Buffy, but I think this is the first episode when he himself really realizes it. He still feels that he's the bumbling, "knocking things over, driving away business" guy. But when he impersonates Angel, he's actually really competent at protecting Virginia. Hopefully this starts the beginning of him really proving it to himself and to Cordelia, proving her statement that he "can't do stuff on his own" thoroughly wrong.

And even though the Shami was a sham, he raised some very true points for Angel to think about. I hope Angel really does do some personal reflection. I'm also glad that somebody finally addressed how silly it seems that a vampire drives a convertible in LA. I never understood how that happened.

While I loved the funny, it felt out of place after the intensity of the last couple episodes with Darla. It also kind of puts a pause on the continuation of that story line. But it's still a worthwhile episode.

But mostly I just want to commend the humour of this episode. From everyone's relief that Angel won't have to sing, Angel's "rockiness" being compared to the Rocky movies, Cordelia pretending to be Angel, (probably my favourite line; "Oh, no, I can't do anything fun tonight. I have to count my past sins, then alphabetize them. Oh, by the way, I'm thinking of snapping on Friday," Wes stumbling to be a vampire including drinking "nummy" blood, to the whole impure/lack of virginity of Virginia conversation, it was just a lot of fun.

Wes get's to shine
Joxerlives27 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
GUISE WILL BE GUISE

The Good; So wonderful, finally Wes gets a chance to shine and it's just fabulous. Also love Cordy's Angel impression. And love Rick the guard quietly sloping off when it's revealed that he'd had sex with his employer's daughter.

Bad; Gunn never noticed the existence of netherworld? So how come he once traded his soul at a demon casino? (The House Alway's Wins) Surely there's a better way to get Angels help than threatening Cordy? Wouldn't have Wes have noticed that he'd deflowered Virginia during their sex?

Best line: Angel; "Wesley was in virginia?" Wes; "That's beside the point"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? The father who wants to sacrifice his daughter, my god, talk about the lowest of the low! Prophetically she observes he also insures his car. Angel tortures fake Swami with fishing hook and line through his cheek.

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; 17

Inverting the Hollywood cliché; Angel plans to infiltrate WR&H by 'moving real fast' As Gunn horrifiedly observes 'Going real quick was the plan?"

In disguise; No but love the way Cordy and Wes are able to infiltrate WR&H with just a business suit and a pair of glasses and Wes' Angel impression is priceless.

DB get's his shirt off; 10

Cordy's tattoo;3

Cheap Angel; 5

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 8 Wes: 2

Fang gang knocked out: Gunn by the fake Swami Cordy: 10 Angel: 12 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1 Gunn; 1

Kills: Cordy: 5 vamps, 1 demons Angel; 17 vamps, 18 and 1/2 demons, 3 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 1/2 a demon Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; 5 vamps+ 1 demon.

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 6

Characters killed: the Swami offscreen 27

Recurring characters killed; 4;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 4, Angel, Cordy, Wes and Gunn

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 9,

Packing heat; Wes; 2 Doyle; 1 Angel; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 1;Buffy Wes; 2, one bleached blonde and Virginia

Kinky dinky: Wes has sex with Virginia although he doesn't take her virginity, that was long gone (what girl ever didn't fool her father in that regard?). Of course if she had sex at 16 that's technically statutory rape in California. Virginia is lovely, check her out as the 'Blair' witch in Charmed although her outfit in that episode exaggerates her (already respectable) cleavage to the degree it may knock you unconscious. Cordy observes that he 'screwed her over'. The thug refers to Cordy as Angel's piece. Yeska comments that the sacrifice is impure, as Cordy later observes if it was sacrificing male virgins the world would be atheist in a second. Angel protests he isn't a eunuch and that the curse isn't that clear as later proved by Nina/Darla/The Furies.

Captain Subtext; Cordy asks Wes if he has any clothes 'a man would wear'? Of course being Wes he has some excellent suits and Cordy has a very nice business suit. Cordy says she loves Angel. She also refers to Angel as girly. The fake Swami's recipe for Angel's happiness is word perfect for his relationship with Buffy, using her as a Darla substitute (but Buffy made him happy and Darla didn't).

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 4,

Guantanamo Bay; Angel tortures the false Swami with a fishook through his cheek

Buffy characters on Angel; 12 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru

Questions and observations; Angel says he rarely goes to church although it's implied that he's a Catholic. A great satire on Hollywood success, anyone with talent and looks has to have magic. A terrific lightweight comedy episode with Wes coming into his own for the first time and getting a girlfriend, just as he should have.

Wes grows up
limetalhead10 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
As great as Doyle was, this episode showed why Wesley was better in the area of character development. While a half-demon with visions was great, personality wise, he was pretty much set in stone. Bringing in someone with Wesley's quirks allowed for much more flexibility and creativity in shaping his persona as the series went on. Guise Will Be Guise helped accelerate the changing of Wesley in one direction, and that's in his more manly persona. While we still saw some of his classic goofiness at the onset of pretending to be Angel, he adapted very quickly. Look no further than when he beat up the hooded men at Virginia's bedroom. The old Wes would've either ran or passed out. And it ends up leading to him getting laid. Even after Virginia gets mad at Wesley after finding out he lied about being Angel, he still goes back to help her when he realizes the peril she's in. The way he barges in and says "Release her or die" and the way he fights showed how even just pretending to be Angel instilled in him a sense of manliness and bravery. Then when Virginia asks "Why did you come back?", his answer of "I said I'd protect you" shows how even though the situation was very dangerous, he was going to live up to his word.

Wesley the Vampire?
Samuel-Shovel9 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
In "Guise Will Be Guise" (nice title by the way) Angel seeks out a swami to help him with his problems with Darla. Meanwhile Wesley gets thrust into a situation where he has to pretend to be Angel and act as a wizard's daughter's bodyguard.

This is a really fun episode! The schtick of Wesley as Angel brings about a lot of comedic moments and the dialogue in this one brought a lot of chuckles out of me. This is one of the few episodes of this show so far that I was less interested in the Angel plot than I was in what else was going on!

The climax is a twist that I really didn't see coming and the final parlor scene with everyone in confusion on what's actually happening is pretty humorous.

My one qualm is that I felt that Angel should have at least done something to attempt to reprimand Magnus Bryce for attempting to sacrifice his daughter. It seems as if Angel just allowed him to walk away scott free.

Besides this though, a really good Season 2 episode.

Oh, I can't do anything fun tonight. I have to count my past sins, then alphabetize them. Oh, by the way, I'm thinking of snapping on Friday
SleepTight66618 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Oh, I can't do anything fun tonight. I have to count my past sins, then alphabetize them. Oh, by the way, I'm thinking of snapping on Friday - A fun, character-developing filler episode. One negative side on season 2 is that the 'Darla' episodes were so strong that I got annoyed by every non-Darla episode. But what makes this episode so entertaining is the way 'Wesley' turns into this tough guy when he's pretending to be 'Angel' and finally getting 'some'. The actually storyline was a lot less interesting as 'Wesley' had to protect a girl named 'Virginia' from her father's enemies, but they didn't know that her father was planning on sacrificing her. Meanwhile 'Angel' is still torn up about 'Darla' and goes to a swami, or at least someone pretending to be a swami. The funniest scene of the episode was when 'Wesley' was forced to drink pig's blood, Alexis Denisof does a great job at being tortured in the last three seasons, but he is just as good at playing a lame useless idiot. I love him both ways. One thing that I did notice is that Charisma Carpenter's make-up was awful, she looked like a clown with the awful clothing she wore and the hair and all that make up. Despite that, it's quite an enjoyable comedy episode that wasn't quite necessary. But it's always fun when 'Angel' is called a 'eunuch'. WESLEY: It has to be Paul Lanier. He thought that would keep Virginia unprotected. Then when his men couldn't take me out, he tipped off Bryce that I wasn't Angel. He hoped Bryce would get me out of the way. ANGEL: What's going on? Where you in Virginia? WESLEY: That's beside the point. ANGEL: He was posing as you. Protecting a girl named Virginia. This guy Lanier is trying to kill her, or abduct her, or something. Gunn: See? What? That's the plan? Walking real quick was the plan?
bombersflyup1 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Guise Will Be Guise is about Wesley assuming Angel's identity, as Angel meets with a Swami to end his obsession with Darla.

Although it develops characterization, the plot's totally irrelevant. Rather humorous, but not a laugh riot or anything. After Angel just had a discussion denying how important his image is to him with the fake Swami, he's entirely bothered that Wes is wearing his coat, hah. The scene in the elevator of Wolfram and Hart terrific. Gunn unbeknownst to him, tagging along with a loose cannon and Cordy's confrontational approach and persistence gets Angel to just leave.

Fun premise although Wesley commits sexual assault.
joelrmartin-1628311 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the general gist of Wesley pretending to be Angel (laughed out loud when Wesley called blood "nommy") and if that entices you, you won't be disappointed. However there is the unfortunate implication the writers didn't seem to think through that Wesley could be taken to court for "Rape by Deception" after this episode. The episode does acknowledge that Wesley using his false identity for sex is wrong but then puts the effort into making the woman have something worse happen to her (and Wesley ride into her rescue) so that Wesley's crime becomes something of a moral rounding error when all is well and done.
