The episode that --almost-- made me hate Cordy
3 March 2007 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The first time I saw this episode, I was literally screaming at my television screen, "Cordelia, you evil, B*tch!" And I've always liked Cordy. It's just that I feel really protective of Angel. He's surprisingly sensitive and he never seems to get the people that he really wants most: Conner, Buffy and now Cordy. My heart just breaks for the guy. So when I see Cordy telling him that that she can never be with him because of his actions as Angelus and then watch her sleeping with his teenage son... Well, I just can't help but be enraged on Angel's behalf. Luckily, the show manages to salvage Cordy's character later on in the season and I can like her again. Honestly, this is a pretty important episode that sets up a lot of stuff. The remainder of the episodes this season mostly play out in a serial format, one leading directly into the next. Think "24" with vampires. And, like "24," "Angel" can pull of some pretty amazing cliff hangers. So if you've got the season on DVD, be prepared to watch multiple episodes at a time. You probably won't be able to stop yourself.

This episode revolves around the end of the world... Again. See there's a big rock monster called the Beast smashing it's way into LA. When Cordy has a vision of it, Conner and Team Angel try to figure out what it means. Evil apocalypse-like omens are starting all over town. Even Lilah is worried. She gives Angel a file on all the information the took out of Lorne's head. He, Wes and Gunn try and figure out what it means. Meanwhile, Fred and Gunn have been fighting and she goes to a coffee shop to get away from him. There's a earthquake and some fire from the sky. Conner and Cordy end up in the alley where Conner was born and, as they watch, the Beast rises up out of the ground. It fights Conner and tries to strangle Cordy (which sort of confuses me, given later episodes, but oh well...)Then it goes off kill a lot of people. When Team Angel tries to fight it, the Beast flattens them all. Hurt and demoralized, they go back to the Hyperion. Except for Angel, who goes to check on Conner and Cordy. Through a window, he spots them making love.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like all the phones ringing off the hook at Angel Inc., as people call in with their problems. It's fun to listen to Team Angel's one sided conversations with them. "You're number five on the 'blood oozing from walls' list. Try spritzing it with a little 409." Also, all the omens are cool. Birds flying into windows, fire pouring from the sky... And I'm glad that Gunn was the one who figured out the meaning of the files that Angel got from Lilah. Sometimes he doesn't get enough credit. And speaking of Lilah, it just doesn't get any funnier that Lilah pretending to be Fred, complete with little red glasses. Even Wes sort of smiles.

On the down side, there are rats. I hate rats and seeing them in that bathroom creeps me out. Also, I'm not really sure what Fred's deal is. Why is she mad at Gunn? Because he killed the professor guy and she wanted to do it herself or does she feel guilty that he took a life because of her or what? And like, I said, it's infuriating to hear Cordy tell poor Angel that she can't be with him because of Angelus. That's his main sore spot and when Angel sort of cringes away, I just want to deck Cordelia.

My favorite part of the episode: Team Angel fighting the Beast at that roof-top club. He just rips through them again and again. But, they keep standing up and attacking him anyway. It's just a great, dramatic scene.
