"The Andy Griffith Show" The Manhunt (TV Episode 1960) - Plot Summary Poster

(TV Series)

Plot Summary

  • While fishing, Andy and Opie discover that their boat has sprung a leak. Arriving back on shore, Barney pulls up with news that the State Police want to set up a dragnet in Mayberry to catch Derekson, a dangerous convict escaped from State Prison. Andy and Barney are surprised to find that the mission to catch him is no small affair, but even more surprised that the State Police are leaving them completely out of the proceedings. It's not by accident. Captain Barker, the dead-serious man in charge, is a by-the-book type who doesn't take too well to Andy's laid-back, folksy manner; however, Andy, knowing the town and countryside intimately, determinedly sets up a dragnet of his own. Correctly deducing that Derekson has broken into Emma Brand's house (where he holds her at gunpoint), Andy sets his trap by letting it slip to Emma that his boat is docked on the shore of Myer's Lake. Derekson soon sets out across the lake to escape, whereby the leak forces him to swim back to shore right into the hands of the State Police.

  • The state police notify Barney about an escaped prisoner heading toward Mayberry and their plan to use the courthouse as their headquarters for the big manhunt. Captain Barker and his men arrive, make their plans (which don't include Andy or Barney), and leave to set up their roadblocks. Not willing to be left out, the cousins spring into action. Whereby the fugitive catches Barney off guard, takes his gun, and leaves him tied up, Andy - stung by Barker's harsh words over the turn of events - devises a cleaver plan to capture the escapee, earn the respect of the state police, and regain the townsfolk's confidence.

  • The State Police descend on Mayberry when they set up a command center at the jail. They're after an escaped criminal, Derekson, but the Police Captain in charge isn't too open to any of Andy's suggestions, such as keeping an eye on the many back roads in the area. Barney sets up his own road block and, sure enough, comes face to face with Derekson who disarms him and ties him up. Andy knows exactly where the criminal would go and manages to nab the crook.
