Pretty Predictable
Hitchcoc20 November 2019
Other than some nice music, there isn't much plot here. The nice guy who can kill it on the guitar is unmotivated to leave town and test the waters. When a road band comes along, Andy does what he can to hook these guys up. Of course, the whole thing involves the method to induce him to play for these guys.

Not a bad episode, but not one of the better ones either.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a fair episode of "The Andy Griffith Show"--mostly because it lacked the style of most of the rest of the shows. Instead of focusing on Barney and Andy and the locals, the show focuses mostly on Jim Lindsey (James Best) who also appeared in a follow-up episode later in the series.

Jim is a talented but head-strong local musician. He wants to make it big but is easily frustrated. So, Andy decides to try to help out the guy by pulling some strings. First, he arrests a traveling band on trumped up charges (a weakness in the plot--as the Bill of Rights should still apply in small town America). Then he arrests Jim and places him in the adjoining cell--hoping that this will give him a chance to show the big city musicians that he is talented and worth taking with them on tour.

Overall, worth seeing but that's about all. I wanted more development of the regular characters, so this one manages to only be fair.

Mayberry's Jailhouse Rock!
63x927is5840118 January 2013
Sheriff, Andy Griffith's remark of "a man screaming at his dog", in reality was referring to Elvis Presley, shortly after his release of Hound Dog and its extremely quick rise to popularity, in 1956 and 1957. Andy Griffith and Elvis Presley were on Steve Allen's Show, back on Sunday, July 1st, 1956. After with the arrest of Bobby Fleet and his Band with a Beat, then adding Jim Lindsey's arrest, just to introduce them to each other (secretly). Andy's psychology worked out correctly. After the continuous insults, by Bobby Fleet, Jim Lindsey started playing to stop the insults, after thirty seconds, Bobby Fleet's trombone player and trumpet added to Jim Lindsey's musical rhythm and Bobby Fleet listened to their playing together, leading Bobby Fleet to hire Jim Lindsey, there and then immediately. Jim Lindsey left the band later in season one and returned to Mayberry, near the conclusion of season one. Which lead Andy Griffith to call Bobby Fleet back and give Jim Lindsey a second chance.

Best episode of the entire series in my mind
dashriprock-236-83344611 February 2015
I can watch this one a lot, very good, the others covered it well.BY THE BY, my favorite episode is one called the guitar player, nice fellow hangs around Mayberry playing his guitar on the street, Andy tells him he is the best guitar player he has ever heard, the guy is down on himself, does not see it that way..

A traveling band comes through town, a bunch of loud mouth musicians, pretty hip, Andy throws them in jail so that they will have to listen to the young guitar player, the young guy wont play for them, and the leader of the band says he has no time for a hill billy concert, they eventually mock the guy so bad that he eventually plays and knocks their socks off, he is hooted by the band and they go off together.

There is a sequel to it down the road, he returns broke, claiming to be on a holiday, says he made it so big going solo that he is just deciding between offers, truth is he got a swelled head, he wanted his name as the star of the band, so walked away to go it alone...so now broke running up bills everywhere, saying expecting big royalty check any day..not true.

Anyway Andy calls the band leader he wants his great guitar player back, so Andy works his magic again putting them back together, but this time without the swelled head

Never liked it as a kid. Still don't.

For me James Best being cast without actually being a musician always killed it for me. Great guitar work. But, the fakeness of James Best not playing was a huge hindrance. Even watching as a kid I thought it was silly. JB as Jim Lindsey actually did a good job acting. Andy and his enhanced southern accent was a bit annoying how pushy he was. Season 1 has some quality. But, it's also really over loaded with homespun sappiness and hokeyness like this. Wise cracking Bobby Fleet (Henry Slate) was very good. We see an early layout of multiple future ones of the diner. Some good Don Knotts moments like the funny epilogue.
