Andy finds a family filling their truck radiator from the memorial horse troph. Their is some very funny dialog in this episode between Andy and Mr. Darling. It is worth watching for that reason alone. The Darlings are there to meet Dud Walsh who is returning from serving his country. He and Darlene have been "pledged" since they were small children. Meanwhile Darlene develops a crush on Andy and Mr Darling keeps trying to find a place for the family to spend the night. Andy keeps ducking Darlenes advances, and trys keeping the family out of trouble. He eventually puts them up in the jail til they can meet the bus the next day. Some fine bluegrass here also.

The Dillards Plus

A family of bluegrass musicians with serious country roots arrives in Mayberry. The one female, the daughter, is there to meet her betrothed. The whole bunch of hillbillies has little money, so they have to use illegal means to get situated for the night. Charlene immediately falls for Andy (Is he really that knock out good looking?). There are several excuses for the Dillards (the band) to play some of their music.

Darlings more annoying than funny here

The Dillard's music highlights the episode. Not any big laughs. Charlene forcing herself on Andy, and Briscoe's (Denver Pyle) quips were mildly funny. But the episode could of used missing Don Knotts' humor. There'll be better Darling episodes coming up.
Maybe I am just an odd-ball, but I hated the Darlings....

Warning: Spoilers
The fictional Darling family (actually made up of Denver Pyle and some talented bluegrass performers) made several appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show"--and I hated every one of these shows. I am not 100% sure why--it's probably because these folks were just not very funny. Yet they must have been popular since they were recurring characters AND the current score on IMDb is very respectable...but I still hate 'em!
The Darling family arrives in Mayberry to meet the bus--it seems that Charlene's fiancé, Dud, is coming home from the military. However, in the meantime, the family comes in contact with the Sheriff and, with little provocation, Charlene falls in love with Andy and wants him instead of Dud. Andy is horrified but NEVER really makes himself clear or threatens to kill the family to make them go away--I know I sure would have! In the end, Charlene's love is fickle and the sight of the super-manly Dud returns her back to her old Dud-lovin' self.
Aside from some decent music, the entire Darling clan consists of Denver over-acting, Charlene behaving like a dog in heat and the sons who just stare off as if they have brain injuries. It's supposed to be funny...but I never found myself laughing and whenever these episodes air, I try to see if there's something better on TV.
