Sam Becker

Barney grows suspicious of Sam Becker, a farmer newly moved into the area, who is always in a hurry and never seems to want to talk to anyone. He also seems to be buying a lot of groceries and medical supplies and holing up inside his house like a hermit. Andy doesn't think there's anything unusual about the man, but Barney stays on the case, later reporting back on his activities, which Andy seems to think are perfectly reasonable. Barney postulates every kind of theory, from Sam growing marijuana to the possibility of treating someone with a bullet wound. When a big thunderstorm kicks up, Sam suddenly calls Andy out to his house. Mixed signals lead Barney to conclude that Andy has walked into a trap, so he calls up a posse to rescue him. Arriving alone, he finds what all the fuss is truly about: Sam's wife is about to give birth, the doctor is out of town, and Andy is going to have to deliver it himself. Andy puts Barney in charge of keeping Sam calm with old war stories while Andy ... Written by Jerry Dean Roberts <> / edited by statmanjeff

When Andy and Barney stake out Sam Becker's farm and spot Sam driving his tractor in a field, Barney muses that Sam is planting marijuana. Andy doubts it is marijuana but states that Sam is definitely planting something. The goof is that Sam is using his tractor to pull a set of soil cultivation disks. If Sam were actually planting something, he would be pulling a planter implement of some sort and not a set of disks. Also, the disks are just rolling noisily across the top of the ground and not cutting into the soil as would be required for soil cultivation. See more »

A decent but not outstanding episode...
12 October 2010 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

This is a fair episode of the series--neither a particularly inspired one or a bad one. It all concerns Barney once again behaving like an idiot. This time, Barney is obsessed with the very quiet Sam Becker (played by the reliable old TV actor, William Schallert). While it's normal for someone to be quiet or stand-offish, Barney interprets this all the wrong way and assumes that Becker is up to something illegal! Eventually, even convinces himself that Becker is taking care of a criminal with a bullet wound!! However, in the end, the problem turns out to be a lot more mundane--Becker's wife is pregnant and Barney and Andy are called to the family's aid, as there is a storm and the doctor is unavailable! So, it's up to a couple very nervous cops and a very nervous husband to welcome a new life into the world. The highlight of the episode for me was watching the men nervously waiting as well as hearing Barney talking about marijuana! Weird, but not a great episode.
