The character of Warren Ferguson (played by Jack Burns) was brought in to replace Barney Fife after Don Knotts left the show. Warren was referred to on occasion as Floyd the barber's nephew. Replacing the classic character of Barney Fife proved to be an impossible task, however. "Warren Ferguson" did not catch on with the viewers, and he was written out of the series after only appearing in 11 episodes. There was no explanation in any episode story line for Warren's departure; he simply stopped appearing.
When the bus that the Taylors are going to ride to Raleigh arrives in town, you can clearly see busy Los Angeles traffic on the city street that borders the set in the background.
Warren spent 16 weeks at the Sheriff's Academy and was 4th in his class.
Owen Bush, who plays Mr. Jason the fix-it man, returns in "Opie's First Love" as Doyle Perkins the clothier, and later as Mr. Hammond, who prints the raffle tickets in "Goober's Contest."
This is the start of a four-episode arc in which the Taylors travel all the way from North Carolina to Los Angeles.
