You really have to be a loyal fan of TAGS to appreciate this episode. I'm not so sure that I'm that loyal. It's actually not a bad episode, especially if you simply look at it as belonging to Mayberry R.F.D. instead of TAGS. We're treated again to that gorgeous Santa Fe diesel locomotive that brought Barney back to town last season, and Mario's father looks like somebody who's about four years early to a casting call for The Godfather. Sam's housekeeper, Mrs. Fletcher with her sourpuss, makes Kansas' Almira Gulch look like Laura Petrie. She's no doubt a reliable domestic model, but I'd surely be tempted to trade her for a high-spirited Italian job like Sophia. The funniest bit has Goober trying to introduce checkers to Mario's father, whose reaction to what he perceives as winning a game comes across as "OK, so big deal." It's a shame that Mayberry R.F.D. didn't live up to the standards of its progenitor.
