After watching a documentary on television, Howard decides to pack it all in and move to a Caribbean island and take up the life of beachcomber. Most people think he's gone off his rocker but some think he's taking a brave step and hope it all works out for him. He quits his job as County Clerk and soon sets off. He finds a beach front property and is soon lying in a hammock all day, enjoying the view and the beach. He also meets others who have taken up residence there but doesn't exactly find a kindred spirit. He dreams of what he may be like in a few years time and in doing so, scares himself into going back to Mayberry. Written by garykmcd
Nice to see one of the beloved characters getting a chance to basically shine on his own for a bit. Jack Dodson who plays Howard Sprague, did a good turn here. They say this wonderful actor was just like his character Howard. I like the fact that Andy or Aunt Bee or Opie didn't "hog" the episode as usual. I mean I know the show was called "Andy Griffth Show" for a reason. But give everyone else a chance and take a backseat every now and then. Mayberry wasn't just Andy in it. There was so many beloved characters in it. I wish they would have done more episodes like this. Where different characters were the main and only focus of the episode.
Harry Dean Stanton had a nice guest starring role on this one playing the island's beatnik Proprietor. He looked and acted the part exactly!
