This episode marks the first mention of Floyd since his unexplained absence after season 7. (The actor Howard McNear left the show after season 7 due to his health). Andy explains that Floyd decided he had enough money and wanted to retire and Emmett took over the store front for his fix-it shop. No mention though of Howard Sprague owning the building as was revealed in season 7 episode 22.
Although they would have no scenes together, both Ron Howard and Bo Hopkins will be cast in "American Graffiti" just a few years later.
Goober says that he is 36 years old in this episode. In actuality, George Lindsey, who plays Goober Pyle, was 38 years old at the time of filming.
Sam Greene, who plays the would-be buyer of Wally's, also played one of the island bums just two episodes earlier in "Howard's New Life." David Ketchum, who plays the pushy gas pump salesman, was also Harry, the pushy real estate agent in "Floyd's Barber Shop." Bo Hopkins, who plays George, Goober's assistant, will soon make a name for himself when he stars with Ron Howard as the hoodlum Joe in "American Graffiti." This is information is not relevant to the show.
A mild panic went through town when Floyd vacated his barbershop in protest of Howard's rent increase in Season 7. But nothing is said about where Mayberry is getting its haircuts now that Emmett has taken over the building. Nor is any mention ever made of the fact that Howard is actually Emmett's landlord.
