Storyline

Goober, along with several other members of the community, sign up for an American history class. Goober has a lot to say but has difficulty formulating his thoughts and nothing seems to come out right. Embarrassed at the first class, he sets off hunting for three weeks. On his return, several people including Andy, Aunt Bee and Floyd comment on how his unshaven beard makes him look smarter and more like an intellectual. He decides to keep the beard but undergoes a radical personality change. He now has an opinion on everything and rarely lets anyone get a word in edgewise. Andy has to have a serious talk with him. I love this episode. It's full of memorable lines, mostly from Goober. His philosophizing in the barber shop is wonderfully nutty, and Floyd is suitably dazzled by it. The opening scene is pretty funny as Aunt Bee and Opie poke good-natured fun at Andy's continuing education.I especially like the epilogue with Opie trying to wheedle homework answers out of Andy, who doesn't fall for it. And that newspaper he's holding looks like it might be the Mt. Airy News from the headline about the apple festival in the mountains. Nice touch.
