This is the first episode with Emmett as the central figure in the plot.
One thing that Ben Beecham never tells Emmett is that he would wind up doing a lot of long distance traveling eventually. Working full-time in towns the size of Mayberry, Mount Pilot, and Siler City he would burn out all the prospects within a year.
Dub Taylor, who plays Emmett's brother-in-law, was also in the movie "The Shakiest Gun in the West" which starred Don Knotts who, of course, played Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show.
Brother-in-law Ben is played by prolific character actor Dub Taylor. This is his 4th and final appearance on the series, going all the way back to season one where he played Talbot the postal clerk.
Ben tells Howard that one of his insurance salesmen can make as much as $15,000 a year. That was the modern equivalent of about $130,000. In 1968 this ironically would have put Emmett, who constantly minimizes higher education and wealth, in the same income bracket as professionals like dentists and private lawyers.
