"The Andy Griffith Show" Cousin Virgil (TV Episode 1962) - Plot Summary Poster

Plot Summary

  • Barney tells Andy that his cousin Virgil will soon be visiting and perhaps they could offer him a job at the Sheriff's office. Andy takes a wait-and-see attitude - and it's a good thing. When Virgil finally shows up (missing the bus when he went to mail a letter during a rest stop), he seems nothing short of disaster-prone. From spilling the dinner at Andy's house to crashing the squad car, everything he touches seems to end up in disaster. He even cleans the jail keys so thoroughly that they no longer open the cells, leaving Otis trapped just when he has a job interview to got to. As things seem at their worst, Andy finds one thing Virgil is genuinely good at.

  • When Barney's shy cousin Virgil comes in from New Jersey for a visit, Barney suggests to Andy the possibly that he could be useful helping out around the courthouse. Andy worries as he remembers hearing that Virgil is a bit clumsy. When Virgil's bus arrives, he's not on board, but his suitcase is. Tracing back through the bus' route, they find Virgil walking down the side of the road. When they catch up to him, he explains that he bought a post card to mail to Barney and, when he went to mail it, he missed the bus. Andy invites Virgil over to the house, where it's immediately clear that the boy is a walking disaster, screwing up a simple card trick, then making a mess of dinner by knocking the main dish in Andy's lap. Even worse, when he tries to leave, he crashes Andy's car through the garage door. The next day Barney brings Virgil to work where he breaks the glass in the cabinet. Fed up, Andy doesn't want the boy around anymore, so Barney gives him a job he can't mess up - polishing the jail keys. He does a good job sanding and polishing but also rubs off the teeth so they won't open the door. This is a problem for Otis, since he has a job interview and can't get out. Andy gets a clue to Virgil's impediment when he realizes that he is only able to overcome his clumsiness when no one is watching. He asks him to get Otis' cell door open with no one to witness his work. He does, only it is just at the moment when Barney busts through the back wall of the jail.
