The power of friendship...
planktonrules24 October 2010
This is a sweet episode of "The Andy Griffith Show" because it further solidifies the strong friendship bonds between Barney and Andy--and also shows how much his friends in Mayberry care.

The show begins with a surprise party for Barney. His anniversary with the Sheriff's Department has arrived and he thought no one rememberer--but they did and congratulate him on a job well done. This excitement, however, is cut short when they receive word that new state standards for the department would eliminate Barney from being eligible to bean employee. He is too short and too light weight for these standards and he decides to resign. However, his friends encourage him to go to extreme lengths to stretch him and fatten him up--and it appears to be possible he MIGHT just make the cutoff. But, at the last minute his goal becomes unattainable....until Andy comes up with a brilliant solution.

Clever, sweet and charming--this is a nice episode from start to finish.

Body on Trial

This is a pleasant episode. Barney is just short of the civil service requirements for a deputy sheriff. So Andy and the gang work to get a few pounds on him and increase his height. It seems hopeless but there are some strategies which are employed. The strength of love and friendship are put to the test.

Clever and heartwarming

Warning: Spoilers
New guidelines may cost Barney his civic service job. Barney has been a deputy for five years and the changes are physical both height and weight it seems impossible especially the height but Andy gets creative and with the help of Aunt Bee , Thelma Lou and another friend they set about helping Barney pass the physical.

A lot of humor in this one and nothing mean spirited . As for Andy doing something dishonest or cheating it's not the first or last time. Andy isn't above bending or going around the rules sometimes it's a big bend other times it's just following the spirit of the law more than the letter of the law.

Love how Andy bends rules

Barney runs the gamut of emotions. Neglected, appreciated, happy, sad, disappointed, frustrated, then happy again.

A very witty script to have Barney's anniversary as a deputy coincide with the new regulations for deputies. Love the neck brace scenes. Thelma Lou slamming the door, Asa's great line, "Don't fight it... don't fight it."

Everyone can relate to experiencing unfair rules. Sometimes they just need to be bent a little.

DISAPPOINTED!

Really disappointed in Andy that he would stoop to dishonest tactics to help Barney pass his physical. Andy is constantly teaching his son Opie the value of having an honest character, and yet too many times Andy doesn't practice what he preaches! I think the writers could have done a better job with that!

Cheating is cheating

Warning: Spoilers
Odd how immature Andy could be. Barney gets kicked out of his room and after the old lady letting him return there's Andy cooking in the room. Then Gomer has instructions to ride the recruiting bus but there's Andy ignoring the rules and getting Gomer there late. If they wanted to ignore the rules why not put lead weights in his pockets or shoes??

Twisting the rules is cheating. We won't mention Andy trespassing in a man's house so Floyd could tell more lies to a woman he never met. Yeah it's just a TV show but after the last 5 years it's not really funny.
