Did You Know?

This is one of the rare shows beyond the third season where actor Howard McNear (Floyd, the barber) actually moves freely. McNear had suffered a stroke and could not normally walk. In the scene where Barney is presented a surprise cake, McNear can be very briefly viewed walking stiff, with short steps, but without assistance. Normally after his stroke, McNear's scenes were either of him sitting, or standing via a hidden brace.See more »
Continuity: In the opening scene Barney is trying to get Andy to remember what important event happened to Barney 5 years ago today, May 16th. Later that day, as Aunt Bee, Thelma Lou, Floyd, and Opie are making preparations in the courthouse for Barney's 5th Anniversary surprise party, the one-page calendar next to the gun cabinet clearly displays MAY 15. Thirty seconds later they all hide in the back room just a few seconds before Barney walks into the courthouse. A moment later, when they all rush out with the cake and holler SURPRISE, the calendar mysteriously reads MAY 16. And no one had the opportunity to tear the MAY 15 page off.See more »

The power of friendship..., 24 October 2010
Author: planktonrules from Bradenton, Florida

This is a sweet episode of "The Andy Griffith Show" because it further solidifies the strong friendship bonds between Barney and Andy--and also shows how much his friends in Mayberry care.

The show begins with a surprise party for Barney. His anniversary with the Sheriff's Department has arrived and he thought no one rememberer--but they did and congratulate him on a job well done. This excitement, however, is cut short when they receive word that new state standards for the department would eliminate Barney from being eligible to bean employee. He is too short and too light weight for these standards and he decides to resign. However, his friends encourage him to go to extreme lengths to stretch him and fatten him up--and it appears to be possible he MIGHT just make the cutoff. But, at the last minute his goal becomes unattainable....until Andy comes up with a brilliant solution.

Clever, sweet and charming--this is a nice episode from start to finish.
