Convict Eddie Brooke, newly escaped from state prison, evades a police pursuit on the outskirts of Mayberry. While hiding out in town, Barney, who doesn't know he's an escaped con, stops him for littering on the sidewalk. Spotting the cops on patrol (who spot him), Brooke tries to flee but gets into a clumsy accidental tussle with Barney and is captured. Before being hauled away, Brooke vows revenge, shouting to a terrified and confused Barney, "I'll get you for this, Deputy." No one in town knows that the capture was accidental, so they brand Barney a hero. Barney feels ten-feet tall. As his friends later gather around to celebrate with a surprise party in his honor, the state police return with word that Brooke has escaped and is headed back to Mayberry. Though Barney is terrified, when the state police ask for help in capturing Brooke (spotted around Myer's Lake), he's is ready and willing. Yet another episode where Barney is the braggart and needs to be rescued by Andy
12 October 2010 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

During the five seasons where Barney was a regular on the show and even including some guest appearances in subsequent seasons, Barney needed a lot of saving on his job by Andy. This episode wasn't the first of these and it wasn't the last--but it is a pleasant episode nonetheless.

The show begins with Barney very accidentally capturing a wanted criminal. Instead of acknowledging that it was all a fluke, his head (as usual) begins to swell and soon he's acting like a hero. But, when the man later escapes, Barney is naturally scared to death and ready to run for cover. So, it's up to old reliable Andy to step in behind the scenes and make it easy for Barney to catch the man again and save his reputation. And, as usual, Barney hasn't learned a darn thing in the process! Overall, a decent episode and one that further illustrates Andy's affection towards his boob of a deputy. Worth seeing, though it's not an especially funny episode--more just well-crafted and enjoyable.
