Barney was Gold!
Johnny_West22 October 2023
Don Knotts walks onto the set and you can see Andy Griffith looks a thousand times happier than when he sees Goober (replacement Gomer), Warren (Jack Burns, replacement Barney), Emmet (Paul Hartman), Howard (Jack Dodson), Frank Ferguson, Ken Berry, or any of the other unfunny TV actors that became regulars beginning in season 6, after Barney (Don Knotts) left the show.

Barney was born for this show, and he can bring nuances to his role like nobody else. Jack Burns (as Warren) tried to do Barney lines and he was so unfunny it was creepy and sad.

In this guest shot, Barney is paired up with Diahn Williams, a movie star who was born in Mayberry and went to school with Barney. The only problem is that she is 19 years younger than Barney and she also looks a lot younger than Don Knotts.

This was early days of TV, when old men had young TV wives. Perhaps they figured that since most people were watching on a 13" TV screen, they could not notice the difference. Her role is pretty funny as she pretends to like Barney and he falls for it. As usually happened, Barney gets left at the altar when his gorgeous movie star date takes off for Hollywood after she makes her guest appearance for the premiere of her movie.

The nice twist at the end is that Barney gets noticed by his co-workers in Raleigh, thanks to the newspaper photos of him at the premiere.

Another interesting twist is when Andy tells Aunt Bee how much he misses Barney, and the camera focuses on her sad reaction. I wonder if they all realized how much their show had gone down without Barney?

Don Knotts is 20 years older than Diahn Williams.

Don Knotts hits another homerun with a stellar performance. A witty script for the cast to work with. The casting was perfect. Pretty Teena Andrews (Diahn Williams) the kind hearted ding-a-ling red-headed starlet worked well with Don Knotts. I enjoyed Harold Carson's (Chet Stratton) straight man role. The train ride, passenger next to Barney, devastating train depot non greeting all worked brilliantly. The interviewer (Steven Dunne) masterfully cutting off Barney mid-sentence was one of the funniest scenes. I like the karate chop Barney delivered to Goober for opening the door. Aunt Bee's hamming-it-up look at the end with Andy missing Barney was apropos but odd to say the least. Diahn Williams the same class as Andy & Barney was a stretch with the two near 20 years older. Barney gets crushed of course but lands on his feet with his office hotties. Love the straw hat with a black tuxedo.

Just a Bit Too Much

Warning: Spoilers
It was fun to see Barney again. He is a caricature and he brings some fun back to the show. Here a major female star from Mayberry (a former ugly duckling) comes to town to premier her new film. This is outrageous in its own way. For publicity's sake, she is asked who her boyfriends were when she was young. Of course, Barney went out with her when she was a less attractive teenager. So the two are thrown together. If you can buy this ridiculous plot, you can enjoy the show. There is an interesting denouement which adds some hope for the poor guy.
